Andrew Westmoreland of King started his first semester at East Carolina University in a good way — with free textbooks. The books were the prize in a drawing sponsored this summer during freshman orientation by Dowdy Student Store, the university-run bookstore on campus.

All students who attended orientation were invited to come in the store and enter the drawing. One name was drawn from the entries collected from all freshman orientation sessions.

“My parents were pretty thrilled,” Westmoreland said. “And I am very appreciative.” Understandably so — the construction management major’s six required books for the fall semester totaled more than $400.

Westmoreland is a graduate of West Stokes High School in King where he was active on the golf team.

The free textbook promotion is sponsored each summer by Dowdy Student Stores, one of the highest contributors to academic merit, athletic and need-based scholarships at ECU.

"One of the main goals of the Dowdy Student Stores is to provide the ECU students with their textbooks, educational supplies, computer hardware and software, and other types of merchandise that will enhance their learning experiences,” said Bryan Tuten, Dowdy Student Store director. "As a result, we are able to give back to ECU on an annual basis by being one of the leaders in scholarship contributions.”
