Our region’s business is overwhelmingly small business.

The Census Bureau reports companies with fewer than 100 employees account for over 98 percent of all businesses in Eastern North Carolina. Firms with fewer than 20 employees, more than 89 percent. Small businesses are the engine of our local economies and when they flourish, our communities and region do well.

Many of us shop and buy online. In fact, research has shown that four out of five consumers use search engines to find local information. Yet most small businesses, less than two out of five, have their listing on a search engine. Are those firms missing out? For sure. Businesses that have an online presence grow 40 percent faster than those that don’t.

The good news: Google is Coming to Eastern North Carolina to help small businesses strengthen their on-line presence.

On Oct 18, Pamela Starr, Google Small Business Trainer, will conduct a workshop designed to teach small businesses and nonprofits how to help their potential customers and clients find their business online and how to promote their online presence.

The program will cover how to get on Google Search and Maps for free, utilize free on-line tools and best practices for:

■ Creating a free Google My Business listing

■ Improving your website’s visibility in Google’s organic search results, on all devices

■ Advertising your business on Google

Led by one of Google’s professional national trainers, this is a can’t-miss workshop for every small business and nonprofit.

NC SCORE, the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments and Rocky Mount Mills are partnering with Google to host this Eastern North Carolina workshop to improve small businesses and nonprofits ability to compete and grow while also offering networking time to talk to the trainer and meet others.

The Workshop will be held from 3-6 p.m. Oct 18 at Rocky Mount Mills.

■ 3-3:30 p.m. — Registration

■ 3:30-5 p.m. — Workshop

■ 5-6 p.m. — Mixer and networking on Rocky Mount Mills campus
