A local educator is heading to the N.C. School Boards Association conference in November to compete for Superintendent of the Year for the second year in a row.

The Northeast Regional Education Service Alliance or NERESA named Pitt County Schools superintendent Ethan Lenker as its Superintendent of the Year.

NERESA is made up of 16 school districts, including Pitt, Gates and Martin counties.

“Fifteen out of our 16 superintendents nominated Ethan Lenker as NERESA superintendent of the year,” said executive director Dwayne Stallings. “He’ll be on stage in Greensboro in November with seven colleagues running for state superintendent of the year. I think he has a pretty good chance … Dr. Lenker is well known by his peers across the state as a leader in innovation and promoting high quality educational experiences for all students. He is well respected by all and has served on several statewide committees on education issues. Dr. Lenker is an advocate for public education and the opportunities it provides the students of the state.”

Rob Jackson, the 2017-18 NERESA Superintendent of the Year, congratulated Lenker on the award.

“He truly has a heart for students. His passion and zeal for ensuring the children in Pitt County and throughout northeastern North Carolina have access to high-quality educational opportunities have led to increased support from businesses and the community,” Jackson said. “He is a great mentor for new superintendents and a source of wise counsel for all superintendents in the northeast region.”

This is the second year in a row Lenker has been selected as a Regional Superintendent of the Year. Last year, he was named the Central Carolina Regional Education Service Alliance Superintendent of the Year.

Lenker was presented with a plaque commemorating his achievement at the Oct. 1 Pitt County Board of Education meeting.

“Recognitions like this are a culmination of the work of great teachers, principals and staff,” Lenker said. “I am very blessed to have the opportunity to work in such a fantastic community.”

He thanked all the employees of Pitt County Schools and the board of education for its support.

The board of education thanked Lenker for his service and expressed its hopes he would win the state competition.

“If he doesn’t win, we’ll rush the stage,” school board member Melinda Fagundus joked.
