RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina House Republicans will soon begin a process they believe will ultimately end in a law requiring citizens to show photo identification before voting in person.

House Speaker Thom Tillis and the chairman of the House Elections Committee will hold a news conference next Tuesday to lay out their plans.

Tillis spokesman Jordan Shaw said Friday those plans will ensue with public hearings or committee meetings to discuss what voter ID laws in other states look like and to get other input. Shaw says legislation will follow.

Republicans passed a photo ID requirement in 2011 but it was vetoed by Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue. New GOP Gov. Pat McCrory supports voter ID requirements. Democrats and allied groups remain opposed to such bills, saying they would erode voting rights.
