CANTON, N.C. (AP) — Police say a man has been shot and killed in Canton after a dispute with a North Carolina probation officer checking on former inmates.
Canton Police Chief Bryan Whitner says the man was pronounced dead Wednesday evening at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Whitner would not identify the man, the officer or what led to the dispute.
Whitner says the officer was making a series of routine checks on former inmates and found one of them walking along a road. He says the two got into a dispute and the man tried to take a gun from the officer.
Whitner says the State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, which is routine when a state officer is involved in a shooting.
