CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina teenager will spend at least nine and one-half years in prison for raping an 83-year-old woman.
Robert McFadden was found guilty by a Mecklenburg County jury on Thursday. Jurors deliberated for less than two hours before reaching a verdict.
The 18-year-old, who was 16 at the time of the crime, got the maximum penalty from Superior Court Judge Timothy Kincaid.
Shortly after the verdict was read, McFadden broke down in tears. His grandmother later apologized to the victim's family in court.
The woman, who is now 84, testified against McFadden during the trial.
Prosecutors introduced DNA evidence recovered from the scene of the attack that matched McFadden's profile.
