BRYSON CITY, N.C. (AP) — A lawyer for the woman whose daughter's death is at the center of an expanding probe in western North Carolina says the indictments of two social workers represent the tip of the iceberg.
David Wijewickrama (WEE'-juh-wik-ram-uh) represents Jasmine Littlejohn and told The Associated Press the investigation should continue in last year's death of 1-year-old Aubrey Littlejohn.
A Swain County grand jury indicted Candice Lassiter and Craig Smith on Tuesday, charging them with obstruction of justice. Both worked for the county social services department.
Police say Smith falsified records after Aubrey's death to make it look like a proper investigation into abuse allegations had been carried out.
Neither could be immediately reached Wednesday.
Last week, the relative who was Aubrey's caretaker was charged with second-degree murder.
