SANFORD, N.C. (AP) — Lee County families with school-age children still coping with the effects of the spring tornado can get help from the Boys and Girls Clubs.

The Sanford Herald reports that up to 60 children from families affected by the April 16 tornado will be allowed to participate in summer youth activities for free. The program will include academic enrichment, the arts, recreation and field trips. Breakfast and lunch also will be provided at no cost.

Club director Jan Hayes proposed the program to give children something to do during the day while parents focus on repairs, insurance and other disaster-related needs.

The United Way has approved a $10,000 grant to provide the service.

Children in the program must be Lee County residents ages 6-to-18.
