RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Labor Department has confirmed that a 39-year-old man was killed while working at a recycling facility in Raleigh.
A spokesman for Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco says no one saw the accident that killed Simon Martinez on Wednesday night. Montgomery says Martinez was operating a forklift, but was not on the forklift when the accident happened.
It was the second death at a Sonoco recycling facility in North Carolina in a little more than two months. In August, a man operating a forklift at a Sonoco facility in Salisbury was crushed by 1,600 pounds of baled cardboard.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined the Raleigh facility for six violations after an October 2008 inspection. Three violations were serious.
Sonoco is based in Hartsville, S.C.
