Martin named branch manager

of Southern Bank's new office

Lori Parker Martin, vice president in Greenville with Southern Bank, has been named branch manager of the new medical center office on Stantonsburg Road. She also will serve as the professional client banker in the Greenville and Winterville markets.

The new medical center office is scheduled to open later this month.

A native of Ahoskie, Martin earned a degree from Chowan College, now Chowan University, in Murfreesboro. She has been employed by Southern Bank for 20 years and has helped establish the bank's presence in the Greenville area since 2000.

Founded in 1901, Southern Bank and Trust Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern BancShares Inc. with its corporate headquarters in Mount Olive. The bank has more than 50 locations in eastern North Carolina.

NC Magazine features Sartelle

as exceptional woman leader

Susanne Sartelle, president of the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, recently was featured by NC Magazine as an exceptional woman leader in North Carolina.

Under Sartelle's leadership, the chamber was named one of the top three of its size in the nation in 2007. As president of the chamber, Sartelle oversees a staff dedicated to economic advancement and progress in Pitt County as well as improvement of the area's quality of life.

"I am both honored and humbled by this recognition," Sartelle said. "It is a testament to one dynamic chamber team, both staff and volunteer leaders."

Purvis earns Toyota PROS designation

Garry Purvis has been awarded the Toyota PROS (professional retail outstanding salespeople) designation for commitment to longevity at the dealership, dedication to customer service and commitment to continually expand his knowledge of Toyota products.

This is his fourth year earning the PROS designation with Greenville Toyota.

"Throughout his career with us, Garry has set an example of excellence, always going the extra mile for Toyota customers and always striving to achieve his/her personal best," owner Craig Goess said. "He is well deserving of the PROS award."

Purvis, an Ahoskie resident, is one of a select group of salespeople out of approximately 2,500 Toyota sales associates from across the Southeast who received the Elite PROS designation this quarter. PROS consultants are selected for demonstrating excellence in continuing education, customer satisfaction, sales and retention. Recipients of the PROS award are acknowledged by Southeast Toyota Distributors and their peers at an annual regional banquet.

PROS was launched in 1994 by Deerfield Beach, Fla.-based Southeast Toyota Distributors as a benchmark program designed to create higher levels of professionalism within the automotive sales force. To receive the "Elite" PROS designation, Toyota salespeople must have a minimum of 10 years of PROS' membership.

Purvis earned the all-around PROS distinction in 2007.

O'Donahue attends

whiplash symposium

Dr. James O'Donahue of Brone-O'Donahue Chiropractic attended a symposium in Greensboro on whiplash injuries. The Chiropractic Network of the Carolinas hosted the event.

Whiplash is defined as a rapid acceleration/deceleration of the head and neck commonly experienced in most motor vehicle accidents. Common complaints associated with this type of injury include headaches, neck and back pain, shoulder pain, arm and leg pain, dizziness, nausea, fatigue or weakness.

Dr. Arthur Croft was the keynote speaker at the symposium. Croft, director of the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, has been engaged in whiplash research for 18 years. He developed the widely used whiplash grading system (WAD), as well as widely adopted treatment guidelines for the condition.

Lee travels to China

for conference

Dr. Daniel Lee of East Carolina Neurology attended the International Conference on Translational Research at the Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China

Lee presented a lecture titled "From Benchside to Bedside – A New Dawn to Modern Sleep Medicine."

He was accompanied by Dr. John Lehaman, Dr. G. Lynis Dohm and Dr. Jian Ding, all of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Lee is the president of East Carolina Neurology in Greenville and serves as the chief of sleep medicine at the Brody School of Medicine, the medical director of the Sleep Center for Pitt County Memorial Hospital, and the medical director of the Sleep Center for Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Lee has conducted research in pediatric hypertension, sleep disorder breathing, sleep disorders in pregnancy and restless leg syndrome.

Lee has published extensively in numerous professional journals, as well as presented nationally at the American Academy of Neurology, the American Geriatric Society, and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; and internationally at the European Federation of Neurological Societies.
