Some Pirate fans protest
The Reflector’s offer of Pirate baseball tickets to whomever guesses Sunday’s Duke-Carolina score has upset a lot of Pirate fans.
About 20 people out of the 150 or so who have participated in the contest so far sent in bogus responses to the contest.
“Why would a Pirate care,” about the score, they said. The Reflector should not give Pirate tickets away in a contest connected with the Duke or Carolina, they said.
Instead of guessing a score, several Pirate fans typed “sucks” or “0” behind each school’s name.
We apologize. We did not mean to offend anyone by giving away the tickets in such a manner. We should have given it more thought.
That said, scores of people have already submitted guesses in hopes of winning the tickets, so we won’t rescind the offer at this time.
We have altered the contest slightly, however. The winner now has the option to take a $25 American Express gift certificate instead of Pirate tickets if they choose.
The certificate is redeemable just about anywhere, and folks can use it to buy some wings or some beverages or anything they think might be more appropriate.
Thanks for your feedback, and we will be more thoughtful about how we give away tickets next time.
