One in eight Americans… families, children, the elderly… struggle with hunger in our community. As unemployment and poverty numbers rise, more folks are finding themselves making difficult choices: paying for food or paying for rent… paying for groceries or paying for medicine. More of our neighbors are going hungry.
You can help by joining the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina for Hunger Action Month throughout September! Join us for our “Give a Little, Feed a Lot” campaign and help feed more Americans than ever before. Along with Feeding America, the national network of food banks, we ask you to take action by giving just a little of yourself: a little time, a little money, a little voice, to help feed your hungry neighbors.
Help support the nearly 480,000 individuals who are suffering from hunger in our 34 county service area. Participate in Hunger Action Month! Together, we can have an immediate and profound effect on our communities. For more information on how you can help, please visit www.foodbankcenc.org for a list of events and other details, or call Lee Cheney at 919-865-3049.

Immigration forum scheduled for Friday
The Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN) is sponsoring an Immigration Realities and Opportunities Forum on Friday, October 17 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington from 6 to 9:30 pm.
“Lately there have been plenty of negative portrayals of immigrants in the media,” explains Nidia Karina Martinez, one of the event organizers. “On this evening we’ll try to focus on the real contributions that immigrants are making right here in Beaufort County.”
The forum’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Helen Marrow, a sociologist in the University of California system. The Tarboro native wrote her dissertation on immigration and race relations in the southeastern U.S. Most of her research was conducted in eastern North Carolina.
Other panelists include Dr. Diane Rodriguez of East Carolina University, Erin Byrd of Blueprint, and Susan Perry Cole of the NC Association of Community Development Corporations. Juvencio Rocha Peralta of AMEXCAN will moderate the discussion.
A number of elected officials plan to attend, including State Rep. Arthur Williams, Washington Mayor Judy Jennette, and some Beaufort County Commissioners.
Rocha will lead a question and answer session towards the end of the evening.
The event will held in the annex of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church near the corner of Bonner and 2nd Street. All discussion will be in English, though simultaneous translation to Spanish will be offered.
The general public is invited and there is no cost to attend. On-site babysitting will be available.

North Pitt’s Maurice Williams voted N.C. STEP “No Spit” All-Star of the Week Williams honored as the best player in the state who had pledged not to use spit tobacco
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: NC STEP, Paul Turner (828) 648-1211
October 3, 2008 TSF Radio Network, Mike Sinnott 517-927-4570
CANTON, NC – The North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (STEP) is proud to announce that North Pitt’s Maurice Williams is the N.C. STEP “No Spit” All-Star of the Week as the best high school football player in the state who has pledged not to use spit tobacco. Williams rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, scored on a 67-yard reception, and returned an interception for 82-yard touchdown as North Pitt beat Pamlico County, 32-10. As a weekly winner, Williams is now eligible to win the N.C. STEP “No Spit” All-Star of the Year Award.
Coaches, parents, and fans can nominate any player for the N.C. STEP “No Spit” All-Star of the Week. For more information about the campaign or to download a “No Spit” pledge for North Carolina, visit www.TheSportsFlash.com. Each weekly nominee has pledged not to use smokeless tobacco, understanding that smokeless does not mean harmless, as spit tobacco contains more than 28 cancer-causing agents. These cancer-causing agents are present in cigarettes, cigars, smoke, and all forms of smokeless tobacco, including spit, snuff, and chew. The nominees have made the healthy lifestyle choice not to use spit tobacco.
In the Oral Health America 2006 Spit Tobacco Report Card, the nation received a “D” for the use of spit tobacco. That means between 12 to 20 percent of all high school males in the country have used spit tobacco in the last 30 days. The campaign intends to educate young people in North Carolina about the dangers of spit tobacco and reinforce the healthy, lifestyle choice not to use tobacco products, especially spit tobacco.
NC STEP is an effort designed to educate North Carolinians about the dangers of spit tobacco. Each year, between 10 to 16 million Americans put their health at risk by using spit tobacco. NC STEP’s mission is to prevent people, especially young people, from starting to use spit tobacco. For more information about NC STEP, please contact Paul Turner at (828) 648-1211.

Just a comment on the daily reflectors comic strip survey. Although you mentioned that certain comics would continue to run, ie For Better or For Worse, there were some comics not listed at all. Would you also consider ones like Boondocks, Doonesberry and Funky Winkerbean. I realize that Crankshaft and Funky are by the same artist but Funky has always carried better life messages in it in my opinion. Also because Doonesberry seems a little to the left on political views some papers carry it on their political commentary page. Thanks

The Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina opens its arms to all people to join in this opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our statewide history. “The Commemoration of the Baptisms of Manteo and Virginia Dare at the Lost Colony” will be held at the Waterside Theatre in Manteo, NC on August 17th. This event marks the baptisms of Manteo, a Native American, and Virginia Dare, the first child born to English settlers on the North American continent. Not only is this event important to those in the church, but it is an important piece of North Carolina’s culture, racially and historically. “This is the heritage of our state,” said the Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina. “This baptism marked a peaceful beginning to multi-cultural relations in North America. A commemoration of this event allows us as a people to reflect on this beginning and the changes that have shaped our nation and shed light on the challenges we face today.” This celebration will be at 3 p.m. with a reception afterwards. For those planning to attend, please contact Jimi Paderick (252) 522-0885 ext. 233.

New Innovations of Caring With a Heart
Angirudy Home Care Services, Inc. was founded by a family who believes that all people deserve to be cared for and treated with concern and respect. Upon speaking with several senior citizens in the community who felt alone and uncared for, it was decided that it was time to use a simple, but commonly underused principle of “Caring with a heart” as the basis for work done in the surrounding county communities. People today are wanting something more. They are wanting a more meaningful relationship with their caregivers. People are growing disenchanted with services who see them as numbers and not individuals. Angirudy Home Care Services, Inc. is a direct result of the growing demand for caregivers who actually care. Mahatma Gandhi said, “You must become the change in the world that you want to see” and Angirudy Home Care Services is doing just that by “caring with a heart”. Angirudy Home Care Services, Inc.
