Holtz declines Syracuse offer

East Carolina officials will announce later this afternoon that Skip Holtz has declined interest in the Syracuse University head coaching position.

The fourth-year ECU coach is traveling today from New York — where he attended his father’s College Football Hall of Fame induction and met with Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross — to Memphis for today’s Liberty Bowl press conference.

The statement will likely be released prior to this afternoon’s press conference.

I’m glad to hear this. That job is not good enough to justify leaving the Pirates.

hte path to a BCS bowl is easier in a BCS conference. Actually a bit short-sighted by Skip on this one. Probably Auburn has indicated interest and that’s why he’s reluctant. regardless, he’s interested in ND and he’s gone either this year or next.

I disagree with Paul. This is a good school up and coming program, he’s paid well. No reason to freeze in NY at that school. BCS or not. I think he could lead this team to a different conference and put him stamp on that. I’m glad he’s staying.

No one ever said he’s staying. If Syracuse couldn’t woo him, Auburn definitely will.

And what BCS conference is looking to expand? As long as he is at ECU, he will never have a shot at a national championship unless he coaches in a BCS conference.

Coach, the pirate nation wants you to stay… and you will be successful here… and have a true home… Bowden did it with Florida State, Bryant did it with Alabama, you can do it here… cherish the thought of having a home where you are appreciated… Go Pirates!!!

Dave, Holtz wants that ‘home’ to be in South Bend. And who knows, he didn’t say he was staying, just said he wasn’t going to SU. Auburn may be a differnt story.

word from up north is that skip holtz wanted a 7 year contract and syracuse offered 5. bottom line is the future job he really wants is notre dame. another thought is that the pirates are on the short list (and would make a perfect fit) for the big east. so he might have his bcs affiliation after all.

Memphis would go to the Big East before ECU would. Big East just hired a new commish and his first comment was that there are no plans for adding another member. Skip will be long gone at Notre Dame or Auburn before the Big East expands.

bill,

Out of curiosity, where did you get that 7 year contract info? I am an SU grad trying to keep up with the situation and if that’s true, I find it very interesting.

Sorry, Pirate Nation. It’s only a matter of time before the tangible dollars that are offered the Coach outweigh the nostalgia-based notion that E.C.U. will ever be in the position to play for a national championship. Look at the 12-0 Boise State Broncos that the Pirates defeated last year in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. For the second time in 3 years, they are about to go undefeated and not even get a whiff of the national championship. If the Pirates had been undefeated this year, the same fate would happen. Doesn’t Skip deserve better?

Haha. Boise State is the most overrated team in the country. Look at their schedule they are 12-0 because they havn’t played anybody new mexico state, idaho st. get out of here. you see they are 12-0 and still aint number 1 lol they can’t ECU we will shut them down again just like last year in the hawaii bowl.

I also hear that Syracuse only offered 5 yrs. Skip wanted more and Syracuse declined to give it to him. Appears that it was a mutual decision. Syracuse said no and so did Skip.

Regardless, it is just a matter of time before Skip is someplace else. ECU is a CUSA lifer. No Big East. No ACC. No SEC. No room at the inn.

ECU still a nice program though. Nice stepping stone
