Profiles on the victims and suspect

The Daily Reflector

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Here is information gathered so far about the two victims and suspect in Tuesday’s shooting:

Edgar Landon Blackley, 21, majoring in industrial distribution and logistics and business administration at ECU. He lived at North Campus Crossing.

Blackley was an all-sport athlete at J.F. Webb High School in Oxford. He played baseball in Greenville for the semi-professional Tar River Rebels, formerly the Greenville Athletics.

“Landon was a great dude. He was awesome,” said Adam Callis, who went to high school with Blackley. Friend Amanda Nance, an ECU classmate, agreed. “He was a total sweetheart, one of the nicest dudes I ever talked to. If I was hungry, he’d bring me food. This is crazy. He used to invite me to hang out at the pool at Campus Crossings.”

Rebels coach Chad Willis said Blackley had played for the team about three weeks. His brother, Nash, also was on the team. He made a big impression in a short amount of time, Willis said.

“He was very intelligent, soft spoken, knew the game of baseball, was a good first baseman and good in the batter’s box. ... He was an excellent teammate and everybody seemed to like him.”

Charles Andrew “Drew” Kirby, 29, was a manager with Michaelangelo’s Pizza. A lot of his life centered around his work, said Jeff Deering, owner of the business.

“Drew was a great kid. When he finished college at ECU, he jumped on the Michaelangelo’s bandwagon years ago. He was a great person and a great manager who influenced a lot of people at work,” Deering said.

He worked with younger employees and earned their respect as a boss and friend, Deering said. He socialized with friends he made through the shops, including the one he managed in University Commons. “The condolence calls that have been coming in all day long from the customers and families of people who came here and worked here let me know just what a great kid he was,” Deering said.

“I wouldn’t have learned just how much of an influence he had if this hadn’t happened.

“Any one of my employees will tell you what a great guy he was. Most of his friends were connected to work in some way. They can’t believe this happened.”

James Earl Richardson, 32, 1905-5 Kennedy Circle, is a 1996 graduate of J.H. Rose High School, where he played basketball. He is 6 feet 7 inches tall.

He attended Lenoir Community College and went on to play college basketball at Slippery Rock College in 1999-2000. He played professionally for teams in France, Bulgaria and elsewhere in Europe.

He was a player in the Continental Basketball Association in 2006 for the Albany Patroons. (An early report that he was a coach was incorrect.)

A February 2006 report on the Our Sports Central Web site reported the Albany team waived Richardson after he failed to follow coach Michael Ray Richardson's instructions to enter a game.

Richardson the coach tried to put Richardson the player into a blowout win over the Michigan Mayhem, but Richardson the player refused, according to the Web site. Two anonymous sources on the Patroons bench confirmed with the Web site a report in the Albany Times-Union.

"After the game, he said he didn't want to be here," Micheal Ray Richardson told the Times-Union. "So, we released him."

James Richardson's departure left the Patroons with eight players on the active roster.

Police on Tuesday issued two warrants charging him with murder.

2 lives were snuffed out, why do we only hear about one "suspect"? EVERYONE in that car is an accessory to MURDER. Let's see some wanted posters and profiles for them. If they are not pursued to the gates of Hades, 'justice' is denied.

As far as I can tell the only reason to go to downtown Greenville after dark is if you want to be shot at, mugged, raped, assaulted, or spit on.

And stupidity transcends race. White or black there are idiots amongst us all that place no value on life. In this matter the color of a persons skin is irrelevant.

This has nothing to do with anything... but one irresponsible idiot. Can make all the excuses, People didn't die in the civil rights movement for this idiot. His attempt to now hide behind that noble cause to excuse his stupidity is sickening. He's an embarassement and will get what he deserves.

One last thing...

Please remember people, this is surely not the 60's...
The days of lynch mobs, tree hangings, draggings are over.
Picture trying to start a race war in Greenville--that's really not what Greenville needs or what you want.

I wish all the people who made negative comments and racial slurs would say them without hiding behind fake screen names. Oh that's right, you know better, and the daily reflector is on your side.

So sad, ..so sad, closet racists...stand up..or better yet..stay in the closet.

Greenville is growing people. Understand that. ECU is getting bigger. What hurts the most is that this was a local doing the killings. Color has nothing to do with it. Greenville had a white chief, and it was still jacked up. It's the world we live in. Its life...

Stop selling the booze. Put an end to "Liquor By The Drink". Change the bars back to restaurants. Close the restaurants after supper. No you've got to have it all. You've got to be comparable to Raleigh and Charlotte. If we don't change some things it will get worse before it gets better. Love of money, the root all evil.

I'm sure all the feedback you have to offer is valid, I hope the powers that ne are listening. Keep it coming. You make great points, and simple changes can have a profound effect.
It's still hard to believe that there were no officers in the immediate vicinity. I've never seen that, but I quit going downtown much after the turn of the century.

its not that difficult, leave the police out later, and have them cover a larger surface area. Maybe throw some lights in while your at it since there is a supposed "uptown" revitalization. maybe we could put some officers in the cars that are sitting empty in all the freakin parking lots around town. i could go on forever

I left work on many occasions and saw altercations, or ignorant or belligerent behavior that could have been easily prevented if the police were present. Also with the increased number of people commuting downtown, the parking area increases, therefore the block radius the police should cover should be larger.

Different folks need different ways to release. Sorry small tangent. The police are leaving downtown at the latest at 215 or 230, this is when most people are leaving the bars they

With the closing of all the "west side bars" the people that usually went there, began to move downtown. I don't care what color the police chief is, unless his policy is to regard crimes with guns with the absolute strictest measures, he should be deemed incompetent and complicit. There is a legal system we must work under, and thank God for it, but there are ways and policies that can be implemented to get and keep violent and repeat offenders off the street.
