EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

East Carolina University, located in Greenville, is a doctoral-research institution with an enrollment of nearly 28,000. It is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, ECU offers degrees from 11 colleges and schools: arts and sciences, medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, health and human performance, business, the graduate school, education, fine arts and communication, human ecology, and technology and computer science.

It offers 104 undergraduate degree program tracks, two educational specialist degree programs, two certificate of advanced studies programs and 73 master’s degree programs. There are 18 doctoral programs in fields such as medical sciences, education, coastal resources management, communication sciences and disorders, biomedical physics and nursing.

Parking

Visitors to campus can purchase parking permits from the Department of Parking and Transportation Services, located on East 10th Street, 328-6294. They also may obtain one from the department they are visiting. The permit allows parking in specified areas of campus, including the visitor lot at the Howard House on East Fifth Street. No permit is required to use a metered parking space.

ECU Board of Trustees

The 13 trustees make up the university’s governing board. Eight members are appointed by the UNC System Board of Governors and four are appointed by the governor to four-year terms. The student body president is an ex-officio member. They are responsible for promoting the development of the university and they advise the Board of Governors and the chancellor on managing and development of the institution. The board meets approximately five times a year. Members include:

Chairman Robert V. Lucas of Selma is an ECU graduate and founding and senior partner of Lucas, Bryant, Denning & Ellerbe, P.A.

Vice Chairwoman Carol M. Mabe of Greensboro is an independent consultant in brand development and strategic marketing for both business and higher education.

Robert Brinkley of Charlotte serves on the board of directors/trustees of various charitable and civic organizations. He practiced law in Greensboro and Charlotte for 24 years.

Joel K. Butler of Grimesland is the vice president for external affairs for University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from ECU.

Ken Chalk of Winston-Salem is past chairman of the ECU Foundation and co-chairman of the BB&T Center for Leadership Development at the university.

Deborah Davis, appointed in 2011, is a past president of Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Steven W. Jones of Raleigh is an investor and former executive with RBC Bank in Raleigh.

Danny Scott of Swansea, Ill., is marketing operations lead at Monsanto in St. Louis.

Kieran Shanahan, appointed in 2011, is a former federal prosecutor and the principal attorney in Raleigh-based Shanahan Law Group.

Mark Tipton of Raleigh is the owner of Whistler Investment Group. He received his bachelor’s degree from ECU in 1973.

Josh Martinkovic, Student Government Association president, serves on the board as an ex-officio voting member.

As of presstime, two more members awaiting appointment from governor.

PITT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Pitt Community College, located in Winterville, awards associate degrees, diplomas and certificates for more than 60 programs and provides adult basic education, literacy training and occupational extension courses. Enrollment averages about 7,500 per semester with thousands more continuing education participants per semester.

PCC Board of Trustees

Past Chairman Randy Collier of Greenville works with University Health Systems and Pitt County Schools.

Secretary Charles Long of Greenville is a retired school administrator.

Raymond Reddrick Jr., of Greenville is a retired educator.

Dr. Virginia Hardy of Greenville is senior associate dean for academic affairs at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine.

Dr. Peter J. Kragel of Greenville is professor and chair of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine.

Don Mills of Greenville is retired from NACCO Materials.

Kathy Frazier of Ayden is an educator with Pitt County Schools.

James A. Nelson Jr., of Greenville is a partner in Owens, Rouse & Nelson, PLLC - Attorneys at Law.

Tyree Walker of Greenville is chief human resource officer at University Health Systems.

Walter Williams of Greenville is CEO of Wilco Hess, LLC.
