Since I was a high schooler in the mid-1960s, North Carolina's Governor's School has been a fixture in my perception of my home state. Back then I didn't know anything of its origin — in 1963 — only that it was a part of our landscape, a permanent part, I thought.
My young assumption, as it turns out, has proved accurate, at least until this year's turbulent legislative season. Now I'm not so sure.
The budget recently passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly kills funding for the school, possibly ending a tradition of arts study and appreciation that my generation and those following have taken for granted as a mark of distinction for North Carolina.

Governor's School
I agree wholeheartedly with this editorial. We North Carolinians benefit every day from the leadership, ingenuity, and vision of the state's leading minds. Programs like Governor's School help to prepare future leaders, and doing so without regard to family means opens up the possibility of brighter futures for all of NC's residents. The cost to the state to fully fund the program (about $1.5 million) is roughly 16 cents per person per year. Seems like a wise, and effective, investment in our collective future.
