Colligan: Behind the space program

3 Comments | Leave a Comment

On a cloudless night, even roughly 20 miles away, the twin solid rocket boosters poised to shrug off gravity and propel the space shuttle into the heavens paints the sky a deep, bright orange. The light reflecting off the atmosphere is visible long before the flame rises over the horizon, with the familiar craft riding a pillar of smoke over the Atlantic Ocean and into the sky.

Standing on a Florida beach, huddled on a March morning against the strong sea breeze, the only launch I witnessed was a thrilling, inspirational experience.

It overloaded the senses, from the ground rumbling against 5.6 million newton pounds of thrust to the slow comprehension that America had once again, remarkably, sent people into space.

I grew up with the space program

My heart sinks each time I hear reports concerning the last shuttle mission, and how the program is being scrapped afterward. I don't even understand it, why are we giving up our space independence? I can see having a new program to transition to, but now we are at the mercy of others to get us to the space station. Does anybody else see anything wrong with this picture?

things wrong with this picture

It bothers me greatly that this program is being terminated without a replacement. As for the things wrong with it, well just look at the things happening lately. It was not that long ago that Obama came out and said America needs another sputnik moment. This of course referring to the same event this article mentions at how Russia's satellite woke up America and pushed us into space. Now how does our president go from making that comment to ending the shuttle program and having us beg for rides into space from Russia? I mean does anyone else just feel sickened by the thought that after all that has been done we are crawling to Russia of all places to get a ride? It makes me sad to look back at what a proud nation this once was and then look at what we have become. Our government is slowly destroying everything that made this nation great.

Exquisite piece of writing here

Folks, this is one of the best articles ever published in the Reflector by one of the best writers in our midst. Well done, BC. We are fortunate to have your talents and insights here in Greenville and beyond. WE are better for it . . . Thank you. ROB T.
