At 8:57 a.m. Sept. 11, 2001, my phone rang. It was my mom calling from Canada, telling me to turn on the TV.

“You won't believe it, Kel,” she said.

Separated by 900 miles and two countries, we stared at our televisions in awe at the destruction taking place in New York City.
