Kirk: Shackleford horses welcome kayakers

1 Comment | Leave a Comment

This past summer I began kayaking.

Kayaking wasn’t wholly unfamiliar to me since I’d taken lessons briefly when I was 12 or 13 at summer camp. But that was the extent of my paddling experience, and that was a long time ago.

I was invited to take a trip to Shackleford Banks the second week of October with three friends. We’d launch from Beaufort and paddle across the inlet to Shackleford, spend the night camping and return the next day.

Horses on Shackleford Banks

It's 5:00 in the morning and I too am close to the water preparing to go out and spend the day, away from work and the hustle bustle of main stream society, on the water enjoying some time off. I just finished reading about your experience with the horses on Shackleford and I could not help but to reply and express appreciation for your article. It is so nice to read about pleasant things in the world that is so filled with hardship and despair. So much that is written and published in news papers and broadcast on radio and TV is about the harsh realities of crime, war, poverty, pollution etc...etc.! Although it is true that these things exist and are realities that have to be dealt with in life, we all need refreshing relief from time to time to reflect and meditate on the wonders of creation and the positive side of life that exists for all humans if we simply pause from time to time and reflect on the simple things in life that have been provided by our creator and are free of charge if we take the time to reflect and show an appreciative attitude. Thank you so much for sharing and thank you Daily Reflector for publishing good worthwhile material to read.
