A man charged in a Wednesday murder said in court the victim was his best friend and he was not responsible for his death.

Moses Pittman, 34, of 200 Lincoln Street, Bethel, had his first appearance on Friday morning at the Pitt County Detention Center courtroom for an open count of murder and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Greenville police believe Pittman shot and killed Ronnie Chapman, 34, Wednesday afternoon on Mulberry Lane.

District Court Judge Brian DeSoto said Pittman faces up to life in prison without parole or death in the murder charge and a maximum of 204 months in prison for the robbery charge.
