A former East Carolina University student admitted Monday that he shot and killed his father to cover up nearly three years of lies about his schooling.

Kevin R. Kleber, 26, also shot himself in the leg during the Jan. 9, 2011, incident, prosecutors at his murder hearing said. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge J. Carlton Cole to 112 to 144 months in prison.

Kleber lied to Roy Erwin Kleber, 55, of Vero Beach, Fla., about pursuing his master’s degree at ECU. He had not attended class at the school for nearly three years while taking money from his father.
