May is a month of celebration

While May isn't traditionally a celebratory month, it is for many each year in this town.

May means graduation for thousands who attend East Carolina University and Pitt Community College. And while there isn't a lot going on with other events, the town is abuzz with people from all over the country.

Both schools will hold their spring convocation ceremonies on the ECU campus mid-month. Proud parents will descend on the town too, to celebrate their child's milestone. ECU's graduation will be held May 10 and PCC's graduation will be held May 11. It's going to be one busy weekend on and around the ECU campus.

Another milestone this month is mixer's sixth anniversary.

May marks the month that the inaugural magazine was launched and distributed throughout Pitt county. It was a 20-page all-newsprint magazine, there were no glossy pages. Included was a calendar, live music schedule and features on Cinco de Mayo and The Comedy Zone at the Attic.

The magazine has grown and changed, much like the town. There are CD reviews, profiles of local bands, fashion and news about the local professional BMX scene.

But some things have stayed the same. We still have pages of scene around photos and a live music schedule. And the Comedy Zone is still around too, but it's moved to Tie Breaker's Sports Bar and Grill.

To celebrate our anniversary, mixer night will be held May 16 at Pirate's Den in downtown Greenville.

Also in this issue are photo pages from ECU's inaugural Relay for Life event, raising money for the American Cancer Society and the sold-out Apparel and Interior Merchandising Associations annual fashion show on pages 9 and 10.

In addition is an article about the heated presidential race that brought Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton to Pitt County on page 8.
