Pops Symphony

East Carolina University professor Jorge Richter will conduct the Greenville Summer Pops Symphony Orchestra when the group performs at 7 p.m. on the Greenville Town Common as part of the Sunday in the Park series. Free. Call 329-4567.

Snake facts

Goose Creek State Park, 2190 Camp Leach Road, Washington, N.C., will sponsor the program "Venomous Snakes: Myths and Reality" at 3 p.m. A park ranger will inform participants on how to identify venomous snakes and attempt to dispel many of the myths that are associated with snakes. The program will meet in the Environmental Education and Visitor Center. Free. Call 923-2191.

West Side Story

East Carolina University's ECU/Loessin Summer Theatre will present "West Side Story" Tuesday-Saturday in McGinnis Theatre. Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is transported to New York City in the 1950s, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs. Tickets are $20-$30. Call 328-6829.

Snakes alive

The North Carolina Estuarium will hold a "Snakes of the East" program at 1 p.m. This is a live snake program by Howard Vainright of River Park North. Learn to distinguish poisonous and non-poisonous snakes and understand one of nature's most feared creatures. Call for reservations. The estuarium is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. River roving

River Roving Educational River Tours are held at 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and at 10:15 a.m. Saturdays. Free, but reservations are required. Children must be at least 8 years old to ride; an adult must accompany children under 16. The estuarium is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Comedy

Tie Breakers will have the comedy stylings of Johnny Millwater and TL Johnson. The show starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $8. Tie Breakers is at 1920 Smythewyck Drive. Call 439-0555.

Jazz music

Eclectic Gallery and Dessert Bar at Colonial Mall is offering live jazz music by The Dixieland Jazz Band from 7-9:30 p.m. each Thursday in June. Local award-winning artist Richard Wilson Jr., who has a working studio/gallery in the Eclectic, will unveil a piece of art in his jazz series at 7 p.m. The Eclectic Gallery is at 714 S.E. Goose Creek

Goose Creek State Park, 2190 Camp Leach Road, Washington, N.C., will sponsor the following programs:

Fabulous Fireflies: A Tot Discovery Program for ages 3-5, 10 a.m. In honor of America's birthday, the program will explore the world of the firefly. The event will include a story, craft and activity.

Paper Making, 3 p.m.. Learn the art of paper making. Bring dried flowers, leaves and even seeds and turn it all to paper.

Sunday in the Park

Hear The Monitors play a mix of soul, rhythm and blues and contemporary music at the Greenville Toyota Amphitheater at 7 p.m. on July 1. This performance, a Sunday in the Park tradition, is free to the public. In case of rain or inclement weather, the concert is normally canceled. Bring a blanket or chair and come out for any evening of family entertainment. Call 329-4567.

Wednesday

Fourth of July

Celebrate Independence Day from 4-10 p.m. July 4 on the Greenville Town Common at the Jaycees' annual patriotic celebration that includes food, music and, of course, fireworks. Free. Call 329-4434.

If you're out near Farmville, you can enjoy the town's annual 4th of July celebration at the Walter B. Jones Town Common at 7 p.m. There will be music, cake, watermelon and fireworks. Free. Call 753-4670.

Sponsored by the city of Washington and the Historic Downtown Washington Merchants Association, a 4th of July celebration will take place on the waterfront in downtown Washington. Free. Call 975-9367.

Monday

Kids' Dog Show

Think your dog is the best looking pooch in town? Find out July 9 at Greenville Recreation and Parks' Annual Kids' Dog Show. Kids ages 4-13 may enter their dogs in the categories of best trick, best looking, smallest, largest, funniest and best costume. The fun will begin at 6:15 p.m. at Jaycee Park. Barefoot in the Park

East Carolina University's ECU/Loessin Summer Theatre will present "Barefoot in the Park" July 10-15 at 8 p.m. in McGinnis Theatre. The six flights of stairs to his new apartment, eccentric neighbors and his mother-in-law try a newly-wed's patience until he refuses to join his new wife in a barefoot walk in the snow. Cool Cities Ceremony

A ceremony will be held in City Hall at 10 a.m. July 10 to recognize Greenville's recognition by the Sierra Club as a Cool City. Cool cities have made a commitment to stopping global warming by signing the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement. City Hall is at 200 W. Fifth Street. Call 727-824-8813.

Double Run Farm Futurity

Southeastern Reining Horse Association presents the SERHA Main Event and Double Run Farm Futurity competition July 11-15 at the Sen. Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center in Williamston. Family fitness

The Greenville Recreation and Parks Department Aquatics and Fitness Center, 921 Staton Road, will host a "Free Fitness Day" from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. July 14.

Children and adults are invited to swim, lift weights, play basketball and participate in various other exercise activities.

Comedy Show

Mike Epps, a star of HBO's Def Comedy Jam, now on tour with his stand-up comedy routine, will perform at the Greenville Convention Center at 10 p.m. July 14. Couples dance

Motor Speedway

Opening Reception

Emerge Gallery and Art Center will have its opening reception from 6-9 p.m. July 19 for its exhibitions "Greenville Brushstrokes" in the Don Edwards Gallery and "Art Center Extravaganza" in the Harvey Wooten Gallery. The "Extravaganza" exhibit will feature work of students enrolled in classes, workshops and summer institutes at the gallery. Free. Emerge is at 404 Evans St. Call 551-6947.

Historical Film

Anne Shirley, the vivacious redhead of L.M. Montgomery's famous "Anne of Green Gables" books, will take the screen in Bath on July 19 as part of its historical film series. "Anne of Green Gables," the story of an orphan sent to an elderly brother and sister by mistake, will show at 7 p.m. in the visitor center on Carteret Street (N.C. 92). Refreshments will be served. 8 Wheels & Nowhere to Go

Greenville Theater

The Greenville Theater Project will present performances of "Graceland" and "Asleep on the Wind" at the J.H. Rose High School Theater July 20-22 and 27-28. Music In the Streets

Harry Potter Party

Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 3040 S. Evans St., will sponsor "Midnight Magic," a celebration of the release of the seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, at 7 p.m. July 20. Ballroom Dance

The Greenville Chapter of the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association, now known as USA Dance, will hold its monthly dance on July 28. Wild West

Deadwood will present the "Trial of Jack McCall" dinner theater July 28 and the last Saturday of each month. "The Trial of Jack McCall" is a play that ran in Deadwood, S.D., for more than 65 years. The local production is an audience-interaction play, where members are picked from the audience during the dinner to serve as jurors and one person, is selected to play the deputy in the trial.
