Harry Potter: Seven questions for book seven

The Daily Reflector

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

The question of Harry's survival isn't the only mystery Potter devotees want solved in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Readers are (literally) lining up for answers to these seven puzzles as well.

1. Is Dumbledore Dead?

At the end of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore was murdered by Professor Severus Snape, previously believed to be loyal to the Order of the Phoenix (the "good guys"). Some readers are skeptical, saying the circumstances of Dumbledore's death were somewhat suspect. Others simply refuse to accept that Harry's mentor is gone for good.

2. Is Snape a bad guy?

The answer appears to be yes. Since he murdered Dumbledore, it certainly seems like Snape's loyalties lie with the Dark Lord. Yet many readers, even those who believe Dumbledore dead, have faith in Snape in spite of his horrible treatment of Harry.

3. Will Harry return to Hogwarts?

At the end of book six, Harry tells Ron and Hermione that he won't return to school. In fact, it is questionable whether Hogwarts will even reopen since the headmaster was murdered. It is difficult to imagine a Harry Potter story without Hogwarts, however, and lots of readers aren't ready to let go.

4. What are the remaining horcruxes?

Dumbledore has a hunch that Voldemort created six horcruxes, all items of sentimental significance to the Dark Lord, and Dumbledore's hunches are usually pretty accurate. One, Tom Riddle's diary, was destroyed in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," and Dumbledore destroyed another, Salazar Slytherin's ring. That leaves four more, and it's up to Harry to find and destroy them.

5. Who is R.A.B. and where is the locket?

Book six had Harry and Dumbledore hunting for Slytherin's locket, which they believed to be one of Voldemort's horcruxes. In the spot where the horcrux should have been hidden, however, they find a different locket with a note telling the Dark Lord that a person named R.A.B. has stolen the real one. Who is R.A.B.? Readers have speculated that he may be Sirius Black's dead brother, Regulus, but no one knows for sure. What we do know is that Harry will have to find the locket in order to kill Voldemort.

6. What are the "Deathly Hallows?"

No one is sure what this title means, and Rowling isn't telling. Our only hints come from translations of the title from other languages. The Japanese title translates to "Harry Potter and the Secret Treasure of Death." The Swedish title is "Harry Potter and the Relics of Death," which only reinforces what we already knew: in book seven, people will die.

7. Who dies?

In addition to worrying about whether Harry will survive his teens, readers want to know who else will die in the last, and reportedly darkest, of Rowling's books. Rumor is that Rowling has said at least two characters will be killed in "Deathly Hallows," and since she's already let Harry's godfather and his mentor die, we know from experience that no one is safe.
