Briefs: Students win in Geographic Bee

Two area schools have recently named winners in the National Geographic Society’s National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades.
Local school-level winners include:
Kaelyn Quinn of C.M. Eppes Middle and Michael Schroeder of The Oakwood School.
School-level winners qualify to take a written examination that will be used to determine which students advance to state-level competition in April.
First-prize for national competition in Washington, D.C., in May is a $25,000 scholarship.
Rose student in honors chorus
J.H. Rose High School freshman Evan Gray was selected by state audition for the North Carolina Honors Chorus in Winston-Salem.
The clinician for the event was Director of Choral Activities for the University of Kentucky Jefferson Johnson. North Carolina Honors Chorus is a yearly event sponsored by North Carolina Music Educators and the Music Educators National Conference.
Gray, a member of the Advanced Chorus at Rose, is was the only high school student from Pitt County Schools to receive this honor. The chorus is directed by Karen C. Meetze.
