Burger shop shutters

By Jane Welborn Hudson

Friday, October 30, 2009

Greenville's Fuddruckers Restaurant at 1605 E. Fire Tower Road has closed.

The family-oriented, fast-casual restaurant chain specializes in build-your-own hamburgers and shakes.

“The owners decided they weren’t making enough money and decided to close,” said general manager Angel Horne, who relocated to Greenville from Maryland to manage the restaurant.

“They tried their best to find another franchisee to come in and take over. I guess in this economy, they just couldn’t find anyone.”

Horne said the business was celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. It was owned by local franchisees, including Dr. Gary Leonhardt.

“We tried just as hard as we could for five years,” he said. “It was like we couldn’t catch a break.”

The project to widen Fire Tower Road, where the restaurant is located, created issues with accessibility to businesses including Fuddruckers.

A large, upscale shopping mall planned for the vicinity fell through. And the economic downturn has proved critical for many restaurants.

Leonhardt said he and his business partners own the Fuddruckers building.

“We’re talking to several franchisees and there is a chance that one of them may come in and take over,” he said. “Another possibility is that, if the economy improves, we may take another look at it and decide to reopen. And then the third possibility is that a different chain altogether may come in and open there.”

“Hot Dish” will keep you updated. Here's what else is going on in area restaurant news:

Chrissy's

Partner Rex Halso has taken over the entire operation of Chrissy's Steak, Seafood and Oyster Bar, 658 E. Arlington Blvd., from his former business partner and the restaurant's namesake Chrissy Mills.

Rex is changing the name to Pirate's Corner, in the spirit of supporting the East Carolina University Pirates.

And, although he's keeping Chrissy's original menu of steaks and a variety of seafood and salad bar, he's adding some new fare. New sandwiches include the ARRGH Burger, grilled chicken sandwich, shrimp burger and shrimp cocktail, all for $7.99; oyster po' boy for $8.99; and rib-eye sandwich for $9.99. The new appetizer sampler is $12.99.

New entrees include boneless pork chops for $14.99; crab cakes and seafood marinara, each for $15.99; and New York Strip and 10-ounce rib-eye steaks for $15.99. Soft-shell crab will be offered for $17.99.

In the Pirate's Corner lounge adjacent to the dining room, karaoke will be offered on Thursday nights, with a DJ playing requests on Friday nights and shagging to beach music on Saturday nights.

Call (252) 355-2035.

Ledo Pizza update

Linda Searles, who owned the recently closed Ledo Pizza franchise with her husband, Joe Searles, said family health issues were responsible for their decision to shutter the restaurant.

The couple, who opened Ledo Pizza in the Lynncroft shopping center in 2004, said they are relocating to San Antonio, Texas, to be closer to Linda Searles' widowed mother.

“We are really sorry to leave,” she said. “We have a few things to wrap up around town and we will move out there.”

Linda Searles said that the corporate office of Ledo Pizza had the first option to purchase the restaurant. When the offer was declined, they contacted Ronnie Zarou about taking over the business. He has renamed it Manhattan Pizzeria and expanded the menu to include Greek fare in addition to pizza and Italian specialties.

“Ronnie knew someone Joe knew, and we had heard he was interested in getting into business in Greenville,” Linda Searles said. “It was like a turn-key operation, where he just came in and took over. He even kept our employees who wanted to stay.”

Manhattan Pizzeria is at 3150-P S. Evans St.

Dixie Queen

The two Pitt County locations of Dixie Queen Seafood Restaurant are offering fresh North Carolina Spots while supplies last.

Spots are a panfish that have a distinctive spot located just behind their gill plates.

At Dixie Queen, Spots are specially priced and sold on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A three-piece dinner is $5.99 and a senior dinner is $3.25. Each meal includes hush puppies and two sides of your choice.

If someone wants a good place to eat, try Rucker Johns on Memorial. Their prices are not to bad, the beer is always cold, the service is great, and they have live music at different times without being too loud!

I wish Cici's would shutter. That place is really dirty, and smells like sewer inside beyond the drink machine. It has a poor selection of food compared to the other Cici's I've visited in other towns.

It's just too easy to drive to Raleigh to enjoy diverse shopping, eateries, and entertainment. You are right, the city of Greenville offers nothing.

Southern food has an excellent reputation all over the globe(indeed, this is why I am a culinary nationalist!), except with the unwashed Yankee nekulturny class, of which you are a fine example.

Working class southern food has gotta be the cheapest least healthiest food in the US-- salt it fry it and/or sugar it. S'why your children are fat (yours- not mine, but then thay eat real, whole foods)and heart disease is rampant in the adult population. Fudd's closed. So what. It'll get replaced by some food shack equally repugnant...

Without ECU Greenville is essentially tarboro w/o the charm or ambiance. With ECU Greenville manages to be just plain low rent.

It would be great to have a Joe's Crab Shack. We really dont have any seafood restaurants around. Or Red Robin or TGIF's would be good too.

You've obviously never been to Greenville, SC, because if you had, you would know that it is FAR nicer than Greenville, NC! The downtown actually has nice restaurants and shops, there is a large arena (the Bi-Lo center) that attracts real entertainment, and the suburbs have much nicer shopping, dining, and housing options than Greenville, NC could ever hope to have.

Again - my point is that Fudds was a great family place. You can't go to Cook out or Hardees as a family - or do you just take your grub back to your double wide? Didn't know Ledo's bit it. What a sad situation for that small city. There is more to life than Bojangles and vinegar bbq.

$10 for a good hamburger is not too bad as Red Robin includes endless fries and lots of coupons with freebies and 1/2 off burgers. There are several places in downtown DC that charge $50 and up for sliders. Speaking of DC, there are 4 local spots Five Guys, Bens, and Hell Burger, and Whitlows have the best burgers that I have ever have.

Red Robin will never make it in Greenville. They are more expensive than Fudruckers was...I mean $10 burgers, $8 mixed drinks, $12 pasta dishes. Who pays $10 for a hamburger?? not me

As a native New Yorker that now calls Greenville my home, I must say that the economy here is growing and the opportunities here are better than in other areas. My business has had success even through the past three years or so of recession. I am upset Ledo Pizza closed, it was one of my favorites. Five Guys out of DC have some of the best burgers around. Red Robin also is really good!

Actually, Fuddruckers is a chain that started in Texas. The economy of Greenville is very diverse mainly because of ECU. If this City did not have ECU, none of these restaurants would be here and people would not consider establishing a restaurant here.

Just thought I share Greenville is the #1 fast food city in the nation. Also Greenville had a Bob Evans and it closed and became a Verizon store. I'm not real suprised people stop going to Fuddruckers with the new theater opening. I drive out to the new theater because I can't stand the horrible smell, broken seats and glue like floors. They might get people out that way again other than driving home if the improve that place.

The comments here prove why we can't keep restraunts open. Calling Chrissy's high end is not out of line but calling Fudruckers high end is. Fudds was better than any fast food in this town but it wasn't high end or too expensive. That location is just horrible. I'm surprised Basils has made it this long.

Sorry but the milkshakes at CookOut are NOT to die for, who are you kidding? If you want a GREAT milkshake, you need to try Cheeseburger in Paradise, in the real city of Greenville, in South Carolina!
