Several Pitt County schools have recently named winners in the National Geographic Society’s National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades.

School-level winners qualify to take a written examination that will be used to determine which students advance to state-level competition in April.

First-prize for national competition, to be held in Washington, D.C., in May, will be a $25,000 college scholarship.

Local school-level winners include:

Clifton Haynes, A.G. Cox; David Rushing, Chicod; and Jackie Nelson, Hope Middle.
