Teen Zone

Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation is sponsoring Teen Zone from 6-9 p.m. the first and third Fridays of the month through Dec. 11 at the Zone, 4801 Reedy Branch Road, Winterville. The program is open to grades six-nine. Entry fee is $5, and no re-entry is allowed. Call 902-1975.

Arts classes

The Greenville Recreation and Parks Department will sponsor the following arts and crafts classes for children and youth at the Center for Arts and Crafts, Jaycee Park, 2000 Cedar Lane.

Sewing Young, ages 9-15, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursdays from Oct. 1-29. Participants will learn to read patterns and use a sewing machine. Cost is $60 for city residents and $90 for others.

Young Potter's Wheel, ages 10-15, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursdays from Oct. 1-29. Participants will learn to work on a potter's wheel. Cost is $60 for city residents and $90 for others.

Halloween Adventures, ages 6-12, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 7-28. Participants will create Halloween projects. Cost is $50 for city residents and $75 for others.

Drawing From Nature, ages 8-13, 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Oct. 6-27. Participants will work to improve drawing skills by sketching objects found in nature. Cost is $60 for city residents and $90 for others.

Participants may register from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Jaycee Park office, 2000 Cedar Lane. Call 329-4546.

Winterville classes

Winterville Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor arts-and-crafts classes for ages 5-12.

Sessions for ages 5-8 will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 12-Nov. 2. Sessions for ages 9-12 will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Oct. 13-Nov. 3.

Cost is $30 for residents and $40 for others. Call 756-1487.

Youth fitness

The Greenville Recreation and Parks Department will offer exercise classes for kids and teens at the Greenville Aquatics and Fitness Center, 921 Staton Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 6-Nov. 5.

Muscle Up, ages 12-18, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Get Kids Moving, ages 6-12, from 4:30-5:15 p.m.

Cost is $20 for members and $40 for others. Register at Aquatics and Fitness Center. Call 329-4041.

Goose Creek

Goose Creek State Park, 2190 Camp Leach Road, Washington, N.C., has scheduled the following programs:

Countdown to Fall, 10 a.m. Saturday for ages 3-5, accompanied by an adult. Explore how the natural world gets ready for the cold, from how the squirrels bury acorns to how the trees "go to sleep." This hourlong program will involve outdoor exploration (weather permitting), stories and crafts.

Shoreline and Woodland Hike, 3 p.m. Sunday Join a ranger and hike for more than a mile from the salty shores of the Pamlico River to the marshy, fresh water of Mallard Creek. Meet in paved parking Lot 2.

Tomahawks and Arrows, 10 a.m. Oct. 10 for ages 6-12. Learn about the Native Americans who lived along the shores of the Pamlico River before Europeans came, including what foods they ate, what tools they used, and how they cared for their families.

Estuarium

The North Carolina Estuarium, 223 E. Water St., Washington, N.C., will sponsor the following programs in October. Space is limited; participants should call for reservations.

River Roving Educational River Tours, 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. There is no fee for the tour, but advance reservations are required as the boat is limited to 10 passengers. Children must be at least 6 years old to ride; an adult must accompany children under 16.

Big Sweep River Roving Clean Up, 12:45-3 p.m. Oct. 9. Help clean up the beaches along the Pamlico-Tar River. Closed-toe shoes and work gloves required. Children must be at least 8 years old to ride; an adult must accompany children under 16.

The Estuarium is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Call 948-0000.

The following children's story hours are held locally:

10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, preschool story hour, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 3040 S. Evans St. Call 321-8119.

10:30 a.m. Tuesdays beginning Sept. 8, story hour, East Branch Library, 2000 Cedar Lane. Call 329-4582.

10:30 a.m. on first and third Tuesdays beginning Sept. 15, toddler story hour, Sheppard Memorial Library, 530 Evans St. Call 329-4581.

11 a.m. Wednesdays beginning Sept. 9, preschool story hour, Sheppard Memorial Library, 530 Evans St. Call 329-4581.
