SPECTATOR SPORTS

• East Carolina University has NCAA Division 1-A programs in nine men's and 10 women's sports, all of which compete in Conference USA.

• Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium seats approximately 43,000 for football games. Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum seats 8,000 for basketball and Clark-LeClair Stadium seats more than 3,000 for baseball. Other athletics facilities include Bunting Track for Olympic sports and Minges Natatorium for swimming and diving.

In celebration of Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary in 2004, the magazine picked one city from each state to honor with that title. The National Parks and Recreation Association helped the magazine choose Greenville from 250 applications across the country. Greenville's Recreation and Parks Department was recognized in an issue of Sports Illustrated for the job it has done to develop sports in the community.

Here's a look at the facilities that helped make Greenville Sportstown USA:

• Andrew A. Best Freedom Park is located at 315 Oakdale Rd. The park includes a playground and a picnic shelter.

• Bradford Creek Golf Course is located off of U.S. Highway 264 at 4950 Old Pactolus Road. This location features an 18-hole golf course, driving range and club house. Call 329-4653.

• Bradford Creek Soccer Complex at 4523 Pactolus Road. The facility has 25 acres, five regulation-size soccer fields (two lighted and one practice). Plans for expansion include a playground and permanent restrooms. Call 329-4550

• Beatrice Maye Floral Garden Park is located on Farmville Blvd.

• City Pool is located at 1113 Myrtle Ave. The regular season usually runs from June to early August. Hours are 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays and 1:30-5:30 p.m. Fridays-Sundays. The pool is closed on Mondays.

• The public swim fee is $1.50 per participant per day. Children 3 and younger swim free with a paying adult. A nontransferable season swim pass is $10 for children, $15 for adults and $25 for a family. Call 329-4563 or 329-4041.

• Greenville's Disc Golf Course is located at West Meadowbrook Park. The 18-hole course is open daily until dusk and is free to play. Call 329-4567.

• Elm Street Park gym is at 1058 Elm St. and the center is located at 1057 Elm St. The park has a Little League ball field; the Sarah Vaughn Field of Dreams; a practice field; four picnic shelters; a gym, a toddlers' and a children's playground, tennis courts, shuffleboard, bocce ball and horseshoes. Call 329-4650.

• Evans Park/River Birch Tennis Center is at 625 W. Arlington Blvd. The center is 25.5 acres with 12 lighted courts; a tennis center; two softball fields; restrooms and an archery range. Call 329-4559.

• Greenfield Terrace is on Greenfield Blvd. The facility has a 1.2-acre playground, picnic shelter and restrooms. Call 329-4567.

• Greensprings Park is at 2500 E. Fifth St. The park has 25.5 acres with a picnic shelter and 1.5- mile greenway. Call 329-4567.

• Greenville Aquatics & Fitness Center is at 921 Staton Road. The facility has an indoor pool, aerobic and exercise rooms, weight room, indoor climbing wall, fitness center, kids' play area and gym. A membership fee is charged. Call 329-4041.

• Guy Smith Park is at 2100 Chestnut St. The park is 12 acres with picnic tables and three ball fields. Call 329-4567.

• H. Boyd Lee Park is at 5184 Corey Road. The park is 92 acres with a recreation center, gymnasium, three lighted softball fields, cricket pitch, cross country course, a picnic shelter, exercise stations and a playground. Call 329-4550.

• Hillsdale Park is at 2531 Sunset Ave. The 1.72- acre park has a picnic shelter and a playground. Call 329-4567.

• Jaycee Park is at 2000 Cedar Lane. The park has an arts and crafts center, softball field, picnic shelter, tennis courts and playground.

• Also located at the park is an Extreme Park which is open for in-line skating, skateboarding, biking and in-line hockey. Call 329-4567.

• The park is undergoing renovations to its ramps. At Jaycee Park, just off Cedar Lane, the Extreme Park opens at 11 a.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday year-round. It closes at 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8 p.m. on Sunday. On Saturdays, the park is open from 9-11 a.m. for beginners only. Participants must be registered to use the park; participants under 18 must be registered by a parent. Registration fee is $2 for Pitt County residents and $5 for others. Required safety equipment must be worn at all times. Call 329-4120.

• Paramore Park is at 401 E. Firetower Road. The park has a playground and a picnic shelter. Call 329-4567.

• Peppermint Park is at 1400 Brownlea Drive. The park has playground equipment and a picnic shelter. Call 329-4567.

• River Park North is at 1000 Mumford Road. The parks consists of 324 acres and five ponds with fishing, boat rental, camping, nature trails and two picnic shelters. The park is closed on Mondays. Hours of operation vary according to season. From November through February, the park is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. From March through April, the park is open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Call 329-4560.

• South Greenville Park is at 851 Howell St. The park consists of 9.1 acres with a recreation center and gym, playground, multipurpose ball field and a picnic shelter. Call 329-4549.

• Sports Connection is at 1701 E. 14th Street. This facility includes a gymnasium, baseball and softball batting cages and a pitching area. Call 215-9090.

• Teen Center/Perkins Complex is at 1703 E. 14th St. This facility includes sand volleyball courts, two youth baseball fields, one practice field, concession stand and a batting cage. Call 329-4567.

• Thomas Foreman Park/Eppes Recreation Center is at 400 Nash St. This 9-acre park has a multi-purpose room, playground, baseball field, two picnic shelters, two lighted tennis courts, gymnasium and recreation center. Call 329-4567.

• The Town Common is at 100 E. First St. The common is 19 acres of land with a 1,500-foot esplanade along the Tar River. There are paved walkways and benches, an amphitheater and boat dock. Call 329-4567.

• Walter L. Stasavich Science and Nature Center is located at River Park North at 1000 Mumford Dr. The center houses a 70-seat theater, a turtle touch tank and a 10,000-gallon freshwater aquarium. The center is open from 9:30 a.m-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. The center is closed on Mondays. Call 329-4560.

• West Meadowbrook Park is at 900 Legion St. The 33-acre park has a picnic shelter, soccer field, youth baseball field, one lighted softball field, disc golf course, playground and restrooms. Call 329-4567.

• Westhaven Park is on Cedarhurst Drive. The park is 1.5 acres with an open play field, playground and picnic shelter. Call 329-4567.

• Woodlawn Park is on Woodlawn Avenue. The .63-acre park has handicapped-accessible playground equipment and a picnic shelter. Call 329-4567.
