'When In Rome' is romantic crossbreed

Q What do you get when you cross a movie like “Three Coins in a Fountain” with all those “Gidget” flicks?
A “When in Rome.”
Everyone knows the myth, that you’ll find love when you toss coins into Trevi Fountain in Rome. But what Beth (Kristen Bell) doesn’t know is that taking a coin or two out of the fountain causes the people to whom they belonged to fall for you.
Thus our heroine has a gaggle of love-struck guys chasing her around the Eternal City and back to New York, their hearts aflutter.
One of them happens to be Nick (Josh Duhamel), a handsome guest at her sister’s wedding in Rome. Others include a self-absorbed male model with six-pack abs, a love-smitten street magician, and a gaa-gaa Italian artist. Even her dentist shows up.
This is quite a windfall for Beth, a pretty blonde who has always been unlucky in love.
Bell is an up-and-comer, recently seen as one of the wives in “Couples Retreat” and as the self-absorbed title character in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”
Duhamel is familiar to TV viewers as the hunky casino security guy on “Las Vegas.” And the gung-ho major in the “Transformer” action movies. Music fans know he’s married to Fergie, sexy lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas.
Look for a few other nice-to-see faces. Don Johnson as the girl’s dad. Anjelica Huston as her boss. Danny DeVitto in a cute cameo.
The romantic comedy “When in Rome” is currently playing at Greenville Grande and Carmike 12.
Don’t confuse this “When in Rome” with previous movies of the same name — the 1952 Van Johnson mistaken-identity comedy or the 2002 Olsen twins direct-to-video teen-mishap comedy. Different movies, different plots.
This “When In Rome” is one of those lighthearted romantic comedies that — a recent trend? — seem to take their name from a city’s slogan. You know, “When in Rome do as the Romans do.” Another example would be that silly Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz comedy, “What Happens in Vegas.” What next? A road-trip movie called “Virginia Is for Lovers” or a romantic romp called “It’s Better in the Bahamas”?
Travelogue meets Hollywood.
