Writing journals honor work of Greenville author

Author Tony Brown of Greenville has received several writing honors.

His short story “The Easter Gift” has been accepted for publication in the July 2010 edition of The Storyteller Magazine. The story is set in Greenville with part taking place at the Falkland Wildlife Access area. It features references to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and Duplin Wine.

“I appreciate the suggestions I got from Patsy O’Leary and the writing class at Pitt Community College and also from Cheri Johnson in revising the story at editor Regina Williams’ request,” Brown said. “They helped make this possible.”

Brown’s short story “The Tell-Tale Cadillac” was printed in Righter Monthly Review’s December 2009 issue. Brown presented the manuscript to publisher Gene Austin on the last day of the North Carolina Writers’ Network fall conference at Wrightsville Beach in November and was notified the following day of its acceptance for immediate publication. Austin cited “the excellence of writing” in making his acceptance. The magazine can be ordered from www.righterbooks.comat a cost of $7.50 including postage.

In December, Brown also received honorable mention for his short story “The Quest” in the Writers’ Digest 78th annual short story contest, which had more than 13,500 entries.

In September, he received honorable mention for his short story “The New Wall on Rue de la Maison” from Writers’ Journal and received first-place fiction for “Seven Numbers” from Pitt Community College’s Art Forum.

Brown, owner of Tony Brown’s Lawn & Tree Service, previously was a news, features and sports reporter for the Tarboro Daily Southerner, the New Bern Sun-Journal and The East Carolinian.
