Greenville-based University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina is the primary health-care provider in Pitt and surrounding counties. It operates one of the largest networks of health-care providers in the state.
UHS is the corporate parent of Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, a tertiary referral center and teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (http://www.uhseast.com). The system serves 29 counties and more than 1.4 million people through an extensive and comprehensive regional network. It owns, leases and manages hospitals, home health and hospice agencies and physician practices. The system is made up of eight hospitals, physicians practices, home health, hospice and wellness centers, and other health-care services. UHS has more than 9,500 employees among its eight hospitals, an active staff of more than 1,000 physicians, and 1,491 licensed beds.
The system’s 20-member board of directors is appointed by the Pitt County Board of Commissioners and the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. Current board members include: David Womack, (chairman), Dr. Marcus Albernaz, Bruce Austin, Noel Baucom, Janet Bullock, JoAnn Burgdorff, Janice Faulkner, Phil Flowers, Bruce Gray, Ralph Hall Jr., David Harris, Dr. Allan Harvin, William J. Dave McRae is chief executive officer of University Health Systems (the corporation and system). David Herman is the president and chief operating officer of UHS. Steve Lawler is president of Pitt County Memorial Hospital, the flagship hospital in the system. Jack Holsten is chief financial officer and Nancy Aycock is general counsel.
The following institutions and services are affiliated with UHS:
■ Pitt County Memorial Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital governed by the same 20-member board of trustees that governs UHS. For the last complete fiscal year, Oct. 1, 2009-Sept. 30, 2010, the hospital recorded 42,375 inpatient admissions, had 263,548 outpatient visits, and delivered 3,754 babies.
The 861-bed tertiary referral facility is the teaching hospital for ECU’s Brody School of Medicine and is a Level 1 trauma center. The Commission of Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted PCMH three-year approval in 2010 as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities reaccredited the Regional Rehabilitation Center at PCMH through 2013. PCMH is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and is a member of the American Hospital Association, University Hospital Consortium, North Carolina Hospital Association and VHA, Inc. U.S. News and World Report recognized PCMH as one of the nation’s top 50 hospitals for endocrinology in 2006. In 2008, PCMH was recognized nationally as the model for hospitals in testing and treating patients for MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant type of staph infection. ■ Regional Rehabilitation Center at PCMH is a 75-bed, inpatient-outpatient acute-rehabilitation center. It provides state-of-the-art aquatic therapy, vocational evaluation, speech and audiology services and focuses on brain injury, spinal cord injury, pediatric rehabilitation, stroke, neurological disorders and musculoskeletal disorders. ■ Behavioral Health Services at PCMH offers a 52-bed psychiatric unit and cares for mental illness and related disorders.
■ The East Carolina Heart Institute opened in January 2009 as a partnership of PCMH, ECU and cardiovascular experts in private practice, academic medicine and research. It is the first institute in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Teams and physicians at PCMH and ECU had already received international acclaim for advances in minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci surgical system. The East Carolina Heart Institute at PCMH is a six-story, $160 million facility with 120 cardiovascular beds.
■ Children’s Hospital is a 118-bed service at PCMH. The 50-bed neonatal intensive care unit opened in 2005. In June 2011, officials broke ground on a new 78,000 addition to the Children’s Hospital which will provide dedicated space to meet the medical needs of the smallest patients and their families—from newly designed patient rooms to pediatric equipment and specially trained staff. The project is estimated to be completed in 2013.
■ Trauma Center, including the PCMH emergency department, offers EastCare, an emergency air and ground ambulance service. A $25 million construction project and renovation, which included rooftop helipads for emergency helicopters, was completed in December 2003.
■ The Wound Healing Center at PCMH, located at 3900 E. 10th St., Greenville, brings together a team of doctors, nurses and technicians to offer advanced outpatient treatments and specialized care such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients suffering from diabetes and other chronic diseases.
■ Community Health Programs at PCMH collaborates with local government and private agencies to address health issues in Pitt County. Programs include pediatric asthma, school health and senior services. Call 847-6077.
■ ViQuest, the hospital’s wellness center for the public and patients, is located at 2610 Stantonsburg Road. The center is a 52,000-square-foot facility offering a range of wellness and exercise programs. It also offers indoor lap pools and a therapy pool. Call 847-6501.
■ University Health Systems Home Health and Hospice provides health care for patients in the comfort of their homes, as well as care and support for terminally ill patients and their families. The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice, a joint project of UHS and the Service League of Greenville, opened on Wellness Drive in 2008. The eight-bed facility is the only inpatient hospice facility in Pitt County.
■ Community Hospitals, owned leased and managed byUniversity Health Systems include Albemarle Health in Elizabeth City, Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor, Chowan Hospital in Edenton, Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville, Heritage Hospital in Tarboro, Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head and University Health Systems Beaufort Hospital in Washington, N.C. The health system has a number of other subsidiary organizations that operate physician practices, outpatient services, and home health, hospice and wellness services. BRODY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
East Carolina University’s four-year medical school opened in 1977 and was renamed the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 1999.
Today, the Brody School of Medicine enrolls nearly 300 medical students, trains more than 350 medical residents and fellows in 28 accredited residency and fellowship programs. In addition to medical degrees, the school awards a master’s degree in public health and doctorates in anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, pharmacology, physiology and biological sciences.
In 2011, U.S. News & World Report rated the Brody School of Medicine among the top 10 nationally for primary care.
The medical school’s dean is Dr. Paul Cunningham.
ECU Physicians is the group medical practice of the Brody School of Medicine. Practice sites include the ECU Family Medicine Center, the Brody and Pediatric Outpatient Centers, ECU Women’s Physicians, Moye Medical Center, the Firetower Medical Office and more than a dozen other sites.
ECU’s School of Dental Medicine admitted its first group of students in August 2011. The school is geared towards training future dentists to work in rural underserved areas and students in their fourth year of study will train at community services learning centers located statewide, providing low-cost dental care to residents.
The East Carolina Heart Institute is a partnership between ECU and University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. ECU’s clinical, education and research facility for the heart institute opened in 2008.
ECU and UHS jointly operate the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center, which is owned by the Brody School of Medicine. It offers national clinical trials testing the latest treatments in cancer and research. Services provided by ECU and UHS include oncology clinics and radiation therapy. The center is accredited as a teaching hospital cancer program by the American College of Surgeons, and its radiation oncology program is accredited by the American College of Radiology. The teaching hospital’s cancer program, approved by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer, received the Outstanding Achievement Award in March 2011.

PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT
The Pitt County Health Department is a county agency affiliated with the N.C. Division of Public Health under the Department of Health and Human Services. It is located at 201 Government Circle, Greenville. The phone number is 902-2300 for appointments and 902-2305 for general information, or visit www.pittcountync.gov/depts/health.
The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with hours extended until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays by appointment.
Services offered by the department include: pregnancy testing and maternity services, family planning, well child health care, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV testing and counseling, immunizations for children and adults, tuberculosis treatment and follow-up, other communicable disease control, blood pressure/glucose/cholesterol screening, screening for selected cancers, nutrition counseling and the Women’s Infants and Children’s (WIC) nutrition education and supplementation program.
The department also is responsible for environmental health services including permitting of private drinking water wells, conducting soil evaluations and system design for on-site waste water systems, food, lodging and institutional inspections, and mosquito control.
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
■ McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge is a 27,000-square-foot facility for cancer patients and caregivers. It is located on a 3-acre site at 930-A Wellness Drive, Greenville. The only American Cancer Society lodge in North Carolina, it opened in May 2002. A large number of volunteers help staff the facility, operated by the cancer society. Call 695-6143 or 1-800-ACS-2345.
EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

The fall and spring hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. On Saturday and Sunday the hours are 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for urgent care only. During the summer, the center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday. There are no weekend hours during the summer.
JAMES D. BERNSTEIN COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER
The 15,000-square-foot James D. Bernstein Community Health Center serves the uninsured. The facility is located on 3.5 acres at 261 Belvoir Highway, near the intersection of N.C. 11 and N.C. 33 to serve the uninsured.
The building is owned by nonprofit Access East, Inc. and services are provided through Eastern Carolina Community Health Centers with assistance from other agencies. Federal Public Health Act funds subsidize the cost of providing primary care, dental care and pharmacy services for low-income people in Pitt and surrounding counties. The center, dedicated to the memory of Bernstein, who founded and directed the N.C. Office of Rural Health for more than 30 years, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call 695-6352.
HEALTHASSIST
HealthAssist is a program designed to provide assistance with health care services for residents of Pitt and Greene counties. People who do not have health insurance and who are unable to afford health care services will be considered for enrollment. The covered services are case management, specialty care referrals, and outpatient hospital services. Assistance with obtaining prescription medications is available. An application is required for enrollment.
The agency is located at Doctors Park, 650 Medical Drive, Greenville.
HealthAssist is a partnership including state and county organizations and Pitt County health-care providers. Partners include local volunteer doctors, the Pitt County Medical Society, University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine, Assess East, Inc., Greene County Health Care, Inc., Greene County Department of Social Services, Pitt County Health Department, Pitt County Department of Social Services and Pitt Community College.
