Health Tip: Considering Plastic Surgery?

(HealthDay News) -- The proliferation of cosmetic surgery options could make getting a face lift or tummy tuck seem as innocent as a routine dental cleaning. But how do you know if plastic surgery is right for you?

Ideal plastic-surgery candidates come in two categories, says the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The first are those with a solid self-image, but have a physical characteristic they want to improve or change. These patients are typically satisfied with the results of their surgery and continue to think positively about themselves.

The second group consists of patients who have a physical flaw or defect that has taken a toll on their self-esteem. While the adjustment period for these patients may be slower, their self-image is greatly improved, often drastically.

If you're hoping to change your appearance for someone else, you may be disappointed with the results of your surgery. While friends and family may respond positively to your new look and increased confidence, the only person the surgery will change is you.
