(HealthDay News) -- Dealing with a natural or man-made disaster, inclement weather, or similar crisis situation can be easier if you prepare an emergency kit.

Be sure to include these essentials, advises the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons:

  • A first aid kit.
  • A flashlight, small radio and batteries.
  • A whistle, used to signal others.
  • Duct tape, waterproof matches and plastic sheeting.
  • Toilet paper.
  • Blankets.
  • A pair of sturdy shoes.
  • Enough water and non-perishable food to last three days or longer.
