Health Tip: Living With Irritable Bowel

(HealthDay News) -- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) occurs when the intestines squeeze too hard or not hard enough, causing food to pass either too quickly or too slowly. IBS typically affects women, most often around age 20.

Symptoms of IBS include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and gas. The American Academy of Family Physicians says travel, stress, large meals and menstrual cycles may contribute to symptoms of IBS.

The academy suggests eating a healthy diet with plenty of insoluble fiber, including lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grains each day. Also, try to reduce stress, the group advises.
