Jeri Jackson of Greenville relaxes while reading a great summer read on the front porch of Tarboro’s Main Street Inn Bed and Breakfast (www.mainstreetinn.biz), owned by Stuart and Denise Sanderson.
Nothing says summer like a porch, a cool glass of lemonade, a good book and a lazy afternoon. This summer, set aside some time to read. Whether you select a tear-jerker, a romance, a mystery or a memoir, you're sure to enjoy being transported to another world for a while. Here are some "great summer reads," suggested by members of the Her ... magazine readers' panel. You'll find them at local bookstores and online book Web sites.

EDITOR'S NOTE

July: From the editor
For this annual "Great Summer Reads" issue, members of the Her... magazine readers' panel shared reviews of books they would recommend to other women. Some of the titles, provided by national book-publishing companies, were given away to readers' panel members to read and review. Others are favorites from our panelists' own bookshelves.

Members of the Mother/Daughter Half-Marathoners of Pitt County celebrate after participating in the 2008 Outer Banks Half-Marathon.
It's 5:30 p.m. and time for me to leave work and put on my "mom" hat. I struggled for years with fitting one more thing in my life. Nevertheless, during the summer of 2008, thanks to my girlfriend Terry Congleton, I managed to fit in one more activity that has changed my life forever.

TESTED BY HER

  • Ear Cuffies
I have developed a serious problem of self-affliction via heat-styling. When my small-barrelled curling iron broke, I replaced it with a better one that created larger waves. The problem, however, is my ears.
  • Neosporin's NEO to Go! spray
This product is great for my toddler, Carter, who's 3½. The greatest feature is that you do not have to touch the wound ... it is a spray! My son loved it and would try to find wounds for me to spray.

HER COLUMNS

  • Go-to Girls: Young-at-heart grandmother objects to the “g”-word
I just turned 51 in April and my on-and-off fight with my sons and their wives is about them calling me "grandma." I prefer "nana." What is wrong with that title "nana?" Am I being bad by not taking on the title of "grandma"? What do you ladies think?
  • Her Nutrition: Add some flaxseed to your diet
Flaxseeds may be small but they are packed with powerful nutrients. About the size of sesame seeds, they are usually described as having a crunchy and nutty flavor.
  • The eyes have it: Take care of those peepers
I don't buy expensive purses or shoes but love to have reading glasses of every color and design. I have at least 20 pairs located all over my house. If I did not, I sure would not be able to read all the great books that are out there for this summer. We take for granted that we can see or read, but without a great pair of eyes and, in my case, reading glasses, we could not continue to do this as we age.
  • Movie Maven: My fair musicals
I'll tell you, my mother, Santa, loved a musical. I remember the night "West Side Story" was going to be on TV. That was the same weekend I asked my father, Camacho, if he was "a shark." I received a hard look and a stern lecture about stereotyping, gangs and fiction. That night my mom had us fed, washed and in bed in record time. I left the bedroom door cracked open and transferred my pillow to the foot of the bed hoping to hear how the girls liked "to be in America."
  • Far from perfect: Son approaches life with a disarming sense of humor
My son, David, is really funny, nimble-minded and big-hearted. Occasionally, I think God put him on this Earth simply for my entertainment and education.
  • Chapter 12: Choosing wedding cake is a sweet treat for our June Bride
With our wedding day quickly approaching, Josh and I realized we absolutely had to decide on a cake. After all, it's the centerpiece of the reception.
  • Making Meatloaf in Stilettos: Sexy isn't an age, it's an attitude

No one ever said that being a housewife was easy. There's laundry, meatloaf, play dates and all sorts of other things that drive us all crazy.
