Product: Estee Lauder Turbo-Effects Motion Mascara

Claim: Battery-operated brush vibrates to create volume, length, curl and separation.

Cost: $32, available at Estee Lauder cosmetic counters and on-line at www.esteelauder.com

You know how makeup artists suggest you wiggle the mascara wand as you apply it to your lashes, to avoid clumps? Well, now you don't have to worry about your wrist getting sore from all that wiggling — because Estee Lauder has found a way to make the mascara wiggle on its own. Turbo Effects Motion Mascara includes a battery in the cap that gently moves the wand back and forth.

As soon as I twisted the mascara cap off, the mascara wand began moving. All I had to do was touch it to the base of my eyelashes and pull upward through my lashes, and voila! The auto-powered, vibrating brush distributed the mascara lightly on my lashes — with no clumps. One sweep through my lashes was perfect for a light, daytime look. However, for dramatic nighttime lashes, I'd want to repeat several times.

There was no clumping, and I didn't have stray black marks on the skin under my eyes, like I usually get when I'm wiggling the mascara wand myself.

It was quick and easy — a plus on hectic mornings. I was pleasantly surprised by a product that I thought would just be a gimmick.
