Scarf Tying 101

Scarves may be worn in a myriad different ways, and you’ll find a style that’s perfect for any neckline or silhouette.

The simplest way to wear an oblong scarf is to simply drape it around the back of your neck and let the two ends hang down in front of you. For a dressier look, toss one end of the scarf over your opposite shoulder.

The simplest way to wear a square scarf is to take either end and tie it in a knot around your neck, with the knot either in front or back. It’s the way a cowboy wears a bandana.

If you’d like to elevate your scarf-tying skills, here are the instructions for tying scarves in a variety of different ways. Grab some scarves, stand in front of a mirror and experiment. You may even come up with your own unique way to wear your scarf.

Bow tie

Fold a square scarf accordion style into a strip, tie a knot at the end of one side and slip the other side through the knot and you have yourself a cute little bow tie!

French Twist

Fold a large square scarf on the bias into a 2-inch-wide band. Center the scarf in front of your neck. Wrap around, crossing ends behind your neck, and pull the ends forward. Tie a single knot centered underneath your chin. Twist the scarf jauntily to one side of your neck so that the knot is off-center. Finish by tying a double knot. Let ends hang loosely. (If worn with a collared shirt, place the knot toward the middle instead of to the side.)

The Loop

This style was made popular on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Fold scarf in half. Drape the doubled scarf around the back of your neck, with one end over either shoulder. Pull both ends through the loop formed by the fold.

Slip Knot

Fold the scarf into a triangle, and put it around your neck with the ends hanging in front. Then tie a knot in one of the ends, about halfway down, and slide the other end into the knot.
