Winterville plans Halloween contest, movie

Winterville Parks & Recreation will host a Halloween costume contest and a Movie in the Park on Saturday at the Winterville Recreation Park, 315 Division St. Costume contest participants should be in the park by 5:30 p.m. Judging begins at 6 p.m. on creativity, originality and quality in three age categories from infants to age 14. No offensive costumes will be considered. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place contestants for each age group.

The movie will be Ghostbusters (PG) and will follow the costume contest. Children should bring a bag or bucket for candy. For more information, call 756-1487.

Ballroom dance set for Saturday at The Zone

Greenville USA Dance will hold a ballroom dance Saturday at The Zone, 4801 Reedy Branch Road, Winterville. Free Tango lessons begin at 7 p.m.; the dance and mixer are planned from 8-10:30. The cost is $9; $6 for members. For more information, visit www.greenvillencusadance.org or call 355-1522.

PCC to hold open house Saturday

Pitt Community College will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday on the main campus, in the Goess Student Center and in the Coburn Center of the Warren Building. There will be tours, question-and-answer sessions, a carpentry competition and an auction at 10 a.m. of houses built by construction students. Cell phone drive planned

The Family Violence Program of Pitt County will hold a Pitt County Domestic Violence Awareness Day and Cell Phone Drive from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Verizon Wireless, corner of Greenville and Charles boulevards. Information will be offered. There also will be a bake sale, in addition to the used cell phone collection at the event held in observance of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Town hall meeting scheduled for Saturday

A town hall meeting is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in the commercial building at the Pitt County Fairgrounds. Speakers will include Jeff Mixon of the Civitas Institute, Becki Gray of the John Locke Foundation, Dallas Woodhouse of Americans for Prosperity, the Rev. HBCU coalition to meet Tuesday

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Coalition of Pitt County will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sheppard Memorial Library. Plans for the college fair will be discussed. For more information, call Patti Sanders-Smith at 355-1003.
