NAACP to meet

The Pitt County branch of the NAACP will hold its mass meeting at 6 p.m. today at Mount Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 230 Boyd St., Winterville. Delegates will be selected for the state convention in Wilmington, Oct. 11-13. For more information, call Calvin Henderson at 355-2572.

Flu shot clinic planned

Pitt County Health Department will hold a flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Pitt County Cooperative Extension auditorium, 403 Government Circle.

Pneumonia vaccinations will also be available. The health department will accept Medicare Part B and the State Employees and Teachers Plan insurance as payment. Insurance card must be presented at time of vaccination.

For all other individuals, the flu vaccine is $20 and the pneumonia vaccine is $30. No appointment is needed. For more information, contact Pitt County Health Department at 902-2305.

Workshop focuses on energy

North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the State Energy Office of the N.C. Department of Administration will present workshops on "Reducing Energy Expenses at Your Home and Business" Monday in the Pitt County Cooperative Extension auditorium, 403 Government Circle.

The program for businesses and nonprofits is planned from 1:30-4:30 p.m., while the residential program is planned from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The workshops are free but registration is required.

The workshops are planned in recognition of October as Energy Awareness Month by the U.S. Department of Energy and North Carolina.

Driver safety class planned

An AARP Driver Safety Class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the AHEC Monroe Conference Center, 2000 Venture Tower Drive. The class is free and is designed for motorists 50 and older as a refresher course to help refine existing driving skills and develop safe driving techniques.

Safe Communities Coalition of Pitt County, Pitt Partners for Health Older Adult Committee and AARP are the sponsors of this class. For more information or to register, call Jennifer Smith at 847-8688.

International Festival planned

An International Festival is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3250 Dickinson Ave.

The history and geography of more than 15 countries will be featured, and there will be international food vendors, cultural exhibits, performances, demonstrations, dances, music and displays.

Special events include a parade of nations at 11 a.m.; Tae Kwon Do demonstrations at 11:30 a.m.; cultural dancers at noon; a Spanish band at 1 p.m., and singers from Honduras and Italy at 2 p.m.

In addition, a planetarium experience will be offered at 11:30 a.m.; 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Historical society plans event

The Pitt County Historical Society will hold its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Historic Red Banks Primitive Baptist Church, corner of 14th Street and Fire Tower Road.

The event will feature the release of the society's most recent publication, "Cemetery Survey of Pitt County, North Carolina, Book One and Book Two," compiled by William "Bill" B. Kittrell. The 1700-page publication includes surveys of approximately 870 cemetery sites throughout Pitt County and about 50,000 indexed names. The two books are sold together as a set for $50 and will be available during the open house.

Greenville Banks Jr., former society president, will provide comments at 10 a.m. and Kittrell will talk about his publication at 10:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Liz Sparrow at 756-8056 or Sandra Hunsucker at 355-2149.

PCC open house Oct. 28

Pitt Community College will hold a community open house from 2-5 p.m. Oct. 28.

Event organizers say the public can see the school's more than 60 curricula firsthand and participate in activities.

Faculty and staff will discuss their respective educational programs. Events will happen throughout Pitt's main campus and, in particular, the Coburn Center of Warren Building.
