Renovations are breathing new life into a trio of historic storefronts on Dickinson Avenue.
The former Chero-Cola Bottling building, a one-story structure near Reade Circle, will house the Greenville Times and have space for at least two more tenants, said Ryan Webb, who operates the weekly publication. Chero-Cola, first bottled in Georgia in 1905, eventually became Royal Crown Cola, according to the Web site for R.C.
Webb and a business partner purchased the building, constructed between 1914 and 1917, and began improvements with help from a facade grant through Uptown Greenville and the city.
Work has begun on the interior of a unit that will house the Times. Interiors of adjoining units will be completed as tenants sign on, Webb said.
Dickinson Avenue once hosted Greenville's busiest commerce sector, and many buildings from that time remain. The Chero-Cola building was in the Crisp family for years before being bought by Don Edwards about four years ago, Edwards said. The site most recently held a printing business and a mortuary.
