New legislation allowing child placing agencies to act as liaisons between adopted adults and their biological parents has left officials statewide scrambling to come up with a price for the service.
Pitt County commissioners on Monday are expected to decide on the county's rates during their 9 a.m. meeting at the Pitt County Office Building, 1717 W. Fifth St.
The law, which went into effect Jan. 1, says adoption agencies can now help adopted adults obtain health information about their birth parents, or even find them if there is written consent from both parties.
After analyzing the cost of providing the service, officials from the county's Department of Social Services have determined an application fee of $400 and hourly fee of $85 would be appropriate. The fees are subject to change depending on a person's annual income.
Anyone with an annual income below $35,000 will be eligible for a 25 percent to 75 percent discount, while those who make less than $15,000 annually can obtain the services for no cost.
The proposed fees have been approved by the social services board.
Monday's agenda also includes a decision regarding a citizen's request to officially name the intersection of N.C. 102 East and Emma Cannon Road Cannon's Crossroads. The naming would be contingent upon the removal of the designation at the intersection of Fire Tower Road and Old Tar Road.
Pitt County planners unanimously approved the change last month. If commissioners give it the go-ahead, state transportation officials will be contacted about naming the crossroads and erecting the signage.
Commissioners are also expected to discuss the status of the N.C. General Assembly's three-year plan to phase out Medicaid costs paid by counties.
