Pitt County Schools, East Carolina University and other organizations are canceling or altering programs scheduled for Thursday and Friday as a result of the contamination of the Greenville Utilities water supply.

County schools programs canceled Thursday and Friday include: athletics; remediation; feeding programs; camps; driver's education.

Make-ups for grades 3-8 Summer Academy will be moved to next Tuesday and Wednesday. High School Summer School registration, however, will continue at all six high schools from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. today.

All 11-month and 12-month employees will work normal schedules and were told to bring bottled water for drinking purposes.

The Luncheon for Literacy, benefiting Literacy Volunteers of Pitt County and The Daily Reflector Newspapers In Education program, has been postponed until Monday. The event will be held at Outback Steakhouse, 606 S.W. Greenville Blvd.

East Carolina University announced that its dining services will remain open with these precautions:

• Only food items that can be prepared without the use of water or rinsing (those food items that go directly from the freezer or refrigerator to the grill, fryer or oven), pre-packaged food items, milk and bottled beverages are available.

• Only paper and plastic service ware, utensils, and drink ware are in use.

• Approved hand sanitizer is being provided.

• All food and beverages prepared prior to the water contamination alert has been discarded.

In addition the university posted "Do Not Drink" signs on all water fountains and athletics teams are getting ice and water from a source outside Greenville.
