State tourneys roll on for Pitt County All-Stars

SOFTBALL

Babe Ruth State Softball Championship

8U

The Pitt All-Stars fell to Down East, 4-3, in the 8-and-under bracket in the Babe Ruth State Softball Championship in Henderson on Saturday.

Makenna Matthijs led the Pitt offense with two hits.

The squad then dropped to the losers' bracket, and fell to Wayne County, 8-2, to conclude its tournament run.

Lauren Conway collected two hits in Pitt's last game, and finished the tournament with a .750 batting average.

12U

Pitt County's 12U All-Stars got past host team Henderson-Vance, 1-0, on Saturday to advance to the championship round. Caroline Roberson pitched to the win, and Kayla Harris earned the save. Ashton Barbee recorded Pitt's only hit, producing an RBI in the first inning.

Pitt will await the winner of the Williamston-Henderson matchup for its championship date at 9 a.m. today.

14U

The Pitt 14U squad remained in the winners' bracket with a 14-2 win over Wilson County on Saturday. Brittany Owens went 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Sarah Langley turned in a 3-for-4 performance with two runs for Pitt. Lauren Moore earned the win on the mound, and Pitt will take on the Wilson-Wayne winner today at 9 a.m.

16U

Pitt got past Roanoke Rapids, 6-2, in the 16-and-under bracket. Heather Whitley earned the pitching win for Pitt, and the squad will take on the hosting Henderson-Vance All-Stars in today's 11 a.m. final.

18U

Pitt County got 14 strikeouts from pitcher Caitlin Wainright in an 11-0 five-inning victory over Oxford on Saturday.

Wainright also had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Katie Powell, Kaitlyn Maloney and Amy Godley also had two hits apiece.

Pitt advances to the championship where it will face Oxford or Cashie at 1 p.m. today.

BASEBALL

11-12 Little League

MOREHEAD CITY — Tar Heel shut down Havelock, 11-0, in the Little League North Carolina District IV baseball tournament to set up a winners' bracket date with fellow Pitt County squad North State today at 4:30 p.m.

J.T. Casey earned the win for Tar Heel. Aaron Clark and Stokes Lassiter each went 3-for-4 with home runs for Tar Heel.

North State also advanced to the finals with a 2-0 victory over West Craven.

Bryant Battle and Bailey Sugg each had two hits for North State, while J.D. Clark earned the pitching victory.

14U District 5

Jamesville 7

Pitt County Southwest 5

Jamesville eliminated Pitt County Southwest with a 7-5 victory in the 14-year-old Babe Ruth District V baseball tournament at Guy Smith Stadium.

Jamesville will play the Conley All-Stars today at 2 p.m. in the losers' bracket final, and the winner will advance to play Greenville at 5 p.m.

Rick Hardison earned the win for Jamesville, and the offense was led by Thomas Knott's two hits.

Joel Conrad, William Lowery and Joby Tugwell all had hits for PCSW.

Greenville All Stars 9

Conley All Stars 3

Austin Chaing had a big day for the Greenville All-Stars on Saturday.

Chaing earned the pitching win in Greenville's 9-3 win over the Conley All-Stars, and he led the offense with three hits and five RBIs.

Greenville advanced to the championship game, which will be played today at 5 p.m. Conley still has a chance at the title, and will play against Jamesville at 2 p.m. for the right at another crack at Greenville.

Eric Mossman turned in two hits for Greenville. For Conley, Brandon Marsh, Brock Rouse and Adam Pierce all recorded two hits.

15U District 5

ROCKY MOUNT — The Greenville All-Stars edged out Tarboro, 5-4, as the squad both came back from a deficit and held off a rally in the 15U Babe Ruth District 5 baseball tournament Saturday at Nash Central High School.

Greenville trailed 2-1 going into the seventh inning, and took the lead on the strength of a two-run double by Tommy Houmard and a two-run home run by Chase McDonald.

Tarboro rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Greenville's Warren Harvey came on to close out the game.

Houmard earned the win for Greenville, while Harvey collected the save.

McDonald and Houmard each came away with two hits.

Greenville will play Nash County today at 4:30 p.m.
