Dear Dr. K: A friend keeps telling me to try acupuncture for my low back pain. But I don’t understand how a bunch of needles will help. Can you explain how acupuncture works?
Dear Reader: Acupuncture is a technique of traditional Chinese medicine. The theory is that the body maintains a delicate balance of two opposing forces. Disease occurs when these forces are out of balance. This imbalance is believed to block the flow of vital energy. This energy regulates spiritual, emotional, mental and physical balance.
The Chinese believe that by inserting thin needles at specific points on the body, acupuncture unblocks the flow of vital energy. This, in turn, restores health to the body and mind.

Sold on Acupuncture
Triangle Orthopedics in Durham had a Physiatrist who treated me for back pain. He aksed me if I wanted acupuncture or Oxycontin...boy am I glad I said Acupuncture.
4 sessions and I have been pain free for 5 years.
I heard they let him go b/c an accupuncture session took 20 minutes and writing a perscription only 5 minutes...
And on the other hand...I knew a Chiropractor who flew to Atlanta and took a weekend course on acupuncture and now he offers it to his patients....
