It’s far from prime pool seasons in mid January but for some, they are going to take the plunge anyway.
East Carolina University’s 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Student Recreation Center.
The event is open to ECU students, faculty and staff and registration begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center Court No. 1.
Last year 958 participants took the plunge into the icy waters of the outdoor swimming pool at the recreation center.
This year’s Polar Bear Plunge will have an 80s theme. Neon colors and fanny packs are encouraged.
The event started in 1997 as a part of the grand opening week for the Student Recreation Center and only had 35 participants.
This year the SRC are hoping to surpass 1,000 participants. T-shirts will be awarded to the first 1,000 jumpers.
Swimsuits are required and participants should bring their own towel.
“Feed The Bear” canned food drive will be held in conjunction with plunge. Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted to benefit Campus Kitchen.
