Greenville will soon have a new brunch spot in Smash Waffles, which plans to open its physical location on Dickinson Avenue in mid-August.

It joins a number of local restaurants that offer the perfect mid-morning meal for your weekend.

Founders Justin Cox and Hunter Harrison left their corporate jobs with no restaurant experience to found Smash Waffles in December 2016. It currently delivers in Greenville, where it started, and Raleigh.

These are definitely not your traditional waffles. Toppings range from cereal and cream sauce to Nutella and marshmallow. They also feature waffles of the week, which include culinary creations like “Strawberry Smashcake.”

The Greenville restaurant will be the company’s first physical location, and it is going to come with a huge menu expansion. We’re talking savory waffles, and not just with chicken. The menu will include their own brand of coffee, cold brews and creamers. Smash is partnering up with Simple Natural Creamery in Ayden to create a not-so-ordinary ice cream sandwich.

The restaurant will directly across from Dickinson Avenue Public House.

Christy Wallace, spokeswoman for Smash Waffles, said the soon-to-be location will be similar to a European café, which seems like a fitting home for these belgian-style waffles. With Wi-Fi and outlets for your chargers, Smash Waffles will be a great place for work, studying and hanging out.

In honor of its opening, we’ve compiled a list of the best brunch spots in Greenville. Whether you are in need of a Bloody Mary the morning after a Saturday football game or a breakfast buffet (that’s right — endless bacon) there’s a right brunch fit for you.

Christy’s Euro Pub

If it’s a Sunday and you’re looking for a drink, look no further. Christy’s does $3.50 Mimosas (with a twist — pineapple and grenadine) and a $4 Bloody Mary.

Not Sunday? That’s okay. Christy’s brunch is offered every day. Not an early bird? Do not fear. They offer brunch from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christy’s most popular items include their Euro slam, chicken and french toast and hash brown casserole. The restaurant is most known for its Stoner’s Delight, a whole lot of food on top of french toast.

This local dive is for everyone in town. You’ll see students, professors and locals alike.

Café Duo

Café Duo, established in 2010, is a neighborhood restaurant that serves brunch Saturday and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Drink options include Guava Bellini, mimosas, passion fruit mojitos and fresh crafted sangria. Popular brunch items include kale and mushroom Benedict, broken egg sandwich and their fresh-baked bacon sticky buns.

If you’re hungry for lunch-type food, the bistro burgers, soups, ciabattas, pastas and salads are hard to beat.

With their casual, relaxed atmosphere, Café Duo is appealing to all.

The Scullery

Located in the heart of downtown Greenville and started by a grant through the Uptown revitalization program, this mom and pop shop is all about its community.

This summer it has added items like Watermelonade to their existing drink menu which includes white wine sangria. Among its array of coffee options, the Lavender Latte is a must-try.

Their most popular items include the Hungry Pirate and the breakfast bowl. Breakfast is served all day, so you can get those alongside burgers and sandwiches.

The Scullery is constantly putting a twist on classics, all while using local ingredients to help the local economy.

Winslow’s

Three words: Sunday brunch buffet.

I’m talking french toast, sausage, bacon, omelets, hash brown casserole, southern-style biscuits and gravy and an apple crisp for dessert. For $12.95 this brunch buffet appeals to just about everyone.

They also have drink specials on Sundays: $3.50 Bloody Marys, $3.50 Screwdrivers and $2.75 Mimosas.

Any other day of the week, Winslow’s is known for its prime rib, endless sandwich choices and full service bar.
