Movies

East Carolina University Campus Recreation & Wellness will present “THIN” a documentary about four women being treated for an eating disorder, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Hendrix Theatre in Mendenhall Student Center.

Magnolia Arts Center will present “Marion Bridge” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Tipsy Teapot, 409 S. Evans St. The film is about three sisters paralyzed by family secrets. In the midst of struggling to overcome her self-destructive behaviour, the youngest sister, Agnes, returns home determined to confront the past in a community built on avoiding it. Her quest sets in motion a chain of events that allows the sisters each in their own way to reconnect with the world and one another. Set in post-industrial Cape Breton, “Marion Bridge” is a story of poignant humor and drama. This film is unrated and may not be suitable for children. Free. Emergency guide for art

“The Art Emergency Guide,” a new booklet written by Greenville resident Barbour Strickland, provides information on caring for art in an emergency situation.

The guide is available free at local galleries and at the Greenville Museum of Art and includes information on what to do before and after an emergency and how to deal with water damage, fire damage and broken objects.

Strickland owns Strickland Art Resources, an art appraisal and consulting firm, and FrameMakers, an art framing company.

Auditions

Magnolia Arts Center will hold auditions for “Fahrenheit 451” from 6-8:30 p.m. Nov. 17-18 at the Music Academy of Eastern Carolina, 1400 Red Banks Road. Callbacks will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Music Academy. Production dates are set for Feb. 19-21 and 25-27. GMA

The Greenville Museum of Art will exhibit works from the Works Progress Administration Collection through April 24, 2010, in the Commons Gallery. During the depression of the 1930s, the Roosevelt Administration created the WPA to aid out-of-work artists. In 1943, after the WPA was disbanded, several small museums and community art centers were given collections of work done by these artists during the 1930s. Through the efforts of Rachael Maxwell Moore, the GMA was fortunate to receive a collection of prints. These works will be displayed.

The West Wing Gallery will display recent additions to the museum’s permanent collection through Jan. 7.

The 37th annual Greenville Museum of Art Fine Arts Ball will be held Nov. 20 at the Greenville Convention Center, 303 S.W. Greenville Blvd. There will be food, an open bar and entertainment from the Sleeping Booty Band as well as merchandise and gifts certificates donated for the silent auction. Tickets are $125. Gray Gallery

The Wellington B. Gray Gallery Jenkins Fine Arts Center on the East Carolina University campus will exhibit the “2009 School of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition” through Nov. 21.

Located off Fifth Street, the gallery is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. Call 328-6336.

PCAC at Emerge

The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge will exhibit the work of Travis Snyder and Jessica Braxton Nov. 6-28. An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Nov. 6. Music by the Osiris Duo will be played during the reception on guitars made by Travis Snyder.

“Visual-Aural Progression: The Journey Thus Far, Furniture and Guitars” by J. Travis Snyder will be on display in the Don Edwards Gallery. Synder is a master of fine art candidate at East Carolina University’s School of Art and Design. The Harvey Wooten Gallery will feature digital photography by Jessica Braxton, a bachelor of fine art candidate from the ECU School of Art and Design. Her photographs are large landscape panoramas that document agricultural North Carolina and the relationship that man has with the land.

PCAC at Emerge will offer the following workshops

• 10 a.m.-noon Nov. 7: Make your own 2009 Holiday Ornaments. A clay workshop for ages 5 and older. Cost is $20 for members and $40 for others.
• 1-3 p.m. Nov. 14: Make a Santa cookie plate and mug. For ages 5 and older. Cost is $20 for members and $40 for others. Discounts available for siblings/families.
• 10 a.m.-noon Nov. 21: Recycled Jewelry. An adult jewelry workshop. Cost is $50 for members and $70 for others.
• PCAC at Emerge also offers six-month club memberships in metalsmithing and ceramics. Call for more details.

City Art Gallery

City Art Gallery will hold its holiday showcase beginning Nov. 6. An opening reception will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Nov. 6. New work in a variety of mediums will be available for holiday gift purchases.
