The patriarch of the famous Avett family is performing with some of Greenville's favorites this month.

Jim Avett, father to Seth and Scott Avett of the Avett Brothers (Columbia Records), is playing Jan. 30 at Tipsy Teapot, 409 S. Evans St., along with Nick and the Babes and Anna Vaughn.

Jim is a singer/songwriter based in Concord. In 2008, he released “Jim Avett and Family,” an album of gospel songs that he recorded with his sons, as well as his daughter Bonnie.

This year, Jim has been busy touring in support of “Tribes,” his second release on Ramseur and has captivated audiences in the southeast and on the east coast with his live shows. Among his many appearances include a set at Merlefest in May, an appearance on the Blue Plate Special radio program on WDVX-Knoxville, and he played several shows in New York City in the fall.

“Jim Avett's rustic, folksy songs are a product of a life lived on the road, whether as an enlisted member of the United States Navy, an itinerant welder or a touring musician,” wrote the Washington Post. “With influences from Chuck Berry to the Everly Brothers, it's also proof that the apples — sons Seth and Scott — never fall that far from the tree.”
