When the original lineup for Trainwreck split this year, four of the five members broke off to form a new funky group hitting local stages as Backyard Groove.
“We have a little different mix of music,” said trumpeter Jarrett Henderson. “A mix we like a little more. We're trying to do some more powerful songs, more challenging music and what entertains the crowd.” He cited Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire as artists they like to cover.
Henderson said they didn't like the direction they were going with Trainwreck, but now they're “doing music with a good groove and a good feel.”
The new lineup includes Al Martin, guitar/sax; Chris Knight, vocals/bass; William King, guitar; Scott Crosby, drums; and Henderson. So far they're averaging about six shows a month, says Henderson with a bit of a break in October so he can focus on personal engagements.
“It's taking off a lot faster than any of us thought it would,” he said.
Henderson also said they have one big project coming up that they can't announce until everything is finalized.
